Conjuration in Toriel | World Anvil

Conjuration

The conjuration school of arcane Magic calls materials, creatures or energy to the caster and can also be reversed to send creatures to other places, either over long distances or even to a whole different plane of existence. A wizard who specialized in conjurations spells is called a conjurer.   Conjuration is the study of magically creating creatures and objects. There is nothing more enjoyable for a mage than creating a fresh slice of bread or a glass of water. Mages can combine water and air vapors into a water elemental for a short time before they deconstruct into their base liquid forms.   The most famous use is teleportation. The most basic teleportation spell is Misty Step. Attempts to cast a teleportation "on the fly" often result in one very dead mage inside a wall, chair, or another mage. A properly used portal is just as safe as the average ship trip.   When a spell or effect rooted in a school of magic is unleashed, the weave takes on the characteristics and appearance of this magic, such as the characteristic yellow glow of conjuration.

Culture

Justice

The use of conjuration is supervised in Tana's Empire and the Lightfoot Kingdom.   Conjuration is illegal in the Ice-peak Concord. Anyone using conjuration will be going against the local law and will be arrested if by local authorities.   In Tana's empire and the Lightfoot Kingdom, it is the Academy of magic who regulate the use of conjuration through the law of arcane, and only the summoning or binding of extra-planar entities is forbidden.
"The use of magic to summon of bind extra-planar entities, through the practice of Connjuration, is strictly forbidden. The study of Conjuration for the purpose of magical understanding shall be unrestricted."
— Law of Arcane
It is the College of Lore, the magical institution within the concord that forbid the use of conjuration, even research on the subject is banned.

Subschools

Creation

These spells manipulate the Weave itself to create matter, to create an object or creature. Most, but not all of these spells require more magic to hold the creation together after it has been made and when the magic of the spell wears off, the creation simply disappears and the matter returns to its original form, whatever that may have been. Those that don't rely on magic to hold it together last indefinitely.

Summoning

Summoning spells bring a creature or object from wherever it currently is to the caster of the spell. Lower-level summoning spell instantly sent the creature or object back whenever the spell expires while more powerful ones allow summon to stay.

Planar

Planar magic is the art of understanding the various realms and planes, seeking information from those otherworldly places and ways to step through portals and bend the fabric of reality.   Lower-level planar magic allows teleportation spell and similar teleportation effect, but the mages specializing in planar magic are rare, but usually powerful spellcasters that never stay in one plane for long.
