Avershed Overcharge
Discovered by an elven scientist Alana Avershed, it is the result of a person using too much magical energy without knowing how to properly use and pass on excess energy.
Causes
While not contagious it is rather a side affect of those attempting the use of magick energy before having learned how to drain the excess energy.
Symptoms
In the beginning of the condition taking affect it starts with the natural world reacting to the imbalance of arcane energy in the person with the condiiton. This includes seemingly positive things at times such as exuberated plant growth or more energetic people around you, but can also include more negative effects such as random objects being thrown around telepathically and plants even shriveling.
This is a result of which type of excess arcane energy is left in the person from their earlier uses of magick.
After the inital symptoms which last typically around a week or less depending on the amount of arcane residue, the symptoms start to attack the host instead which include restlessness, paralysis, insanity, and other side effects all related to the type of arcane residue left in the host.
Treatment
There are several different treatments with the most baseline being a transfer of the energy rather than an actual healing of the condition.
The first discovered and easiest to perform is a transfer of the arcane residue from the original host to a willing and semi skilled magic user. This unfortunate outcome is most commonly used in a noble sacrifice scenario or by a village elder saving a younger person in smaller or poorer villages/neighborhoods.
The second treatment is through the use of Arcane Reservoir to transfer the energy from the current host into one. While this issue does not cost a life it is certainly a more dangerous and expensive procedure in terms of worldly costs. It also has the added issue of needing an Arcane Reservoir that matches the wavelength of arcane energy as the arcane residue contained in the host.
The third and final treatment is without a doubt the best of all 3 and also the rarest as it requires a master in the arcane arts. A master of the arcane is able to take the energy out of the host and safely disperse it back into the world without any negative side affects if they wish or if they realize it is a potentially helpful energy they can direct it into what they think it might help such as nearby crops or animals.
This treatment is exceedingly rare however as masters of the arcane are very far and inbetween and usually kept close to the very rich and powerful.
Prognosis
There are two stages to this condition one being the first week or so of symptoms that dont affect the host and then the second stage where the host themselves are vulnerable to attack.
If no treatment is performed then the host will die in one of the ways that directly correlate to the band the arcane residue is related to.
Affected Groups
Any users of Arcane Magic. This notably means races such as Dwarves rarely will interact with this condition as practically all of their magic users are divine casters who draw their magic from their gods or from a pact made with an Ancient or otherworldly being.
The one notable exception is Genasi a they are beings of pure magic and are constantly charging and discharging arcane energy.
Prevention
It is common for schools of magic to leave specialized enchanted Arcane Reservoir on their beginner pupils so that while they are still learning the process of expelling excess energy the reservoir will absorb the excess charge.
History
Due to this simply being part of the nature of arcane energy, it is presumed to have been around ever since people first figured out how to control arcane energy. However, for much of history it is thought that many of these events would've been wrote off as devils or spirits or even the act of the gods.
It notably was extremely common during the War of Endless Aggression as that was when the T'elrov Band was discovered, leading to a large influx of magic users as training was streamlined due to the newfound knowledge.
Cultural Reception
Once Alana Avershed discovered the condition was simply a side effect of improper magic use, races across The Continent quickly became shocked at the loss of life had happened due to simple ignorance and brought a drastic reduction in the number of magic users as even those with the resources to pursue safe magical training didn't want to risk the newfound condition.
