Ranlian

Spear Leader Ranlian (a.k.a. Ran)

A proud warrior who paid the cost in blood for her hubris. Now Ranlian seeks her redemption through the lessons she will learn as a treasure hunter in a group with others. Perhaps in time, she will be able to return to the warband she once served.

Physical Description

General Physical Condition

Ranlian is far taller and stronger than most human females, though it served her well while she served as a Spear Leader in the Elfcutter warband. Her athleticism gives her physique a toned musculature rather than a hulking appearance.

Body Features

While armored, if her face is obscured, Ranlian can pass as a man (due to often using armor fitted for men due to her height) but outside of armor that is quite impossible. Her figure is obviously that of a woman despite her strength and size. Her red hair is often kept in several braids, one long in the back and then shorter ones on the sides. She has a pair of wings that cannot bear her weight (normally) that she keeps bound beneath her armor liner. She has already gotten used to the feeling of having them tied.

Facial Features

Ranlian naturally has blue shining eyes by virtue of her birth, but she disguises them with dark contacts that make her eyes look blue. She uses what she has on hand (whether it's proper makeup or ash) to create shadows around her eyes that she had when she served in Elfcutter's warband, giving her almost tear like shadows.

Identifying Characteristics

Her stark red hair seems to be fairly uncommon, even among the remaining humans. That and her height are good marks of identification. When not trying to hide her identity and armored, her shining blue eyes that stood out even through her helmet's eyesockets was one of the ways enemies knew her on the battlefield.

Special abilities

Radiant Soul, which allows her to manifest her wings (even through armor) and fly as she embraces her Si'yla nature, but for now, she doesn't use this unless there is no other choice.

Apparel & Accessories

Beneath her chainmail, Ranlian wears simple under-linings to prevent the armor from chafing. Her helmet is ornate as well as functional, having wings and a mask that protects her entire face, leaving only her eyes exposed.

Specialized Equipment

She's very athletic and strong, so a lot of the physical tasks ultimately fall on her.

Education

Ranlian was taught how to read and write before she joined the warband and given the barebones of an education, but most of what she learned, she learned through practice.

Employment

She currently works for Mad Dog as a Treasure Hunter.

Failures & Embarrassments

She has one...but she will not talk about it.

Mental Trauma

In her desire to earn more glory, she decided to allow a demonic ritual to be completed. This led to the soldiers under her command being slaughtered in what was supposed to be an easy battle. Though they were victorious, it cost far more blood than it should have. Though she got the story she wanted, when she hears the songs of it, they feel hollow to her.

Morality & Philosophy

"Our lot is to lay down our lives in defense of others." and "Those who fight beside me are those worth dying for."

Personality Characteristics

Motivation

Ranlian is driven by guilt for what her former hubris led to. She's trying to be a better person and wants to learn to be a better leader.

Likes & Dislikes

Likes: Fighting, exercising, singing, writing in her journal, cooking (though she makes no claims to be a chef), good alcohol Dislikes: Extraplanar beings, incompetent leaders, impatient people...probably more but that will do for now.

Vices & Personality flaws

Despite being charismatic, she's not good at opening herself up. A lot about her must remain private. She can be very stubborn, especially when it comes to protecting those she cares about. At times, she can put her desire to protect them to the point of needless self-sacrifice. She likes to fight a lot more than she lets on. This can sometimes guide her actions, especially when drunk.

Personality Quirks

She will not share a room with others. She will not share a tent with others. She bathes alone. She will slip in orcish words in her speech, especially when frustrated.

Hygiene

While fastidious with hygiene, Ranlian occasionally runs into trouble as she cannot use facilities that are not private. She is not above using a bucket of water and soap to clean herself. Having spent her time in an army camp, she does not necessarily feel the need to douse herself in perfume but soap and water is a must. Even in the field, she will wash the under-lining to her armor at least once a week, if not more frequently. Her armor is more of a hassle, but that is why she wears the underlining.

Social

Contacts & Relations

Ranlian is mildly respected by the Orc Warbands that fight in the area of Ars Silica.

Family Ties

Her mother and father dwell back in Ars Hadri.

Religious Views

Ranlian does not place much stock in the powers of the gods or pay much mind to the working of the Ascended, at least not right now. She knows enough about her legacy as a descendant of the Si'yla, but right now, religion and gods mean little to the paladin.

Social Aptitude

She's quite sociable though she tends to win people over by her rather forward personality, rather than through social graces. She learned how to socialize in an orcish warcamp, rather than the city, so she tends to be blunt and to the point. She is out of place among nobility or any place where she needs to perform court speak.

Mannerisms

Her mannerisms are somewhat rough. She is not as loud or as imperious as she was when she was in the orcish warband, having deliberately mellowed herself.

Hobbies & Pets

Ranlian likes to sing, even when not drunk, though it tends to embarrass her if she's sober.

Speech

Her speech changes based on who she's talking to. Among those she doesn't know, she tends to be very formal in her word choice. Around those she feels comfortable, she will speak plainly and more like a soldier.

Wealth & Financial state

Not a lot at the moment. She spent her money on her new venture, gearing up for treasure hunting.

A former officer for an orcish warband, she left after turning an easy battle into a bloodbath. She disguises herself as a human to avoid the looks she gets as Si'ylblood. She dedicates herself now to concepts of loyalty.

Tay's Day Out
36 Cobanium

So I'm stuck in the city for the next few days as I wait for Crowntaker. I've done most of what I came her to do, just need to check in with Darrok. I was going to do that today, but, well, see below. The day started alright. I headed to the Kennels from the Noble Quarter to check on Tay. I guess with Amaiki off in the camp, I've missed having someone to talk to. I'm sure she's enjoying the break, but I'll ask Elma to send a message to her to make sure she's okay tomorrow. Anyway, Tay was downstairs in the kitchen, grinding spices with a mortar and pestle, like my grandma used to have me do. Figured I'd give her another new experience like haggling for groceries, so I took her and the robot dog to the market, gave her a shopping list, and some gold and told her to get everything on the list and she'd get whatever she wanted for lunch. She did alright for a first timer, with getting everything on the list even if the quality was not great. Good enough to get her reward.   After that we went to the Keep of Honour and Justice to check on the knights. It's still falling apart. I wonder if I can get Joss to oversee some repairs with labor from some of the men. I'd probably make it less of a command and more of a "We need to get some people who have carpentry experience so they can build fortifications quickly." to the Warleader. I don't really have much money, to fund it all, but I figure the Keep must have supplies and I'll pay what I can...Just something nice to do for them. I don't think they really know how to take it.   Then we headed to the Human Quarter where we ran into Elma and her honor guard. Tay was shocked by the results of the fire. I guess I didn't give her enough warning about what to expect but...honestly, it's good for the rich girl to see what the world is really like outside her jar and inn. She's stronger than most probably realize, she'll be able to handle it. Sent her back to the inn though since I didn't want her to join us as we went to confront the bastard who burned down Human Quarter. Same reason I didn't bring Darrok. Neither of them would take being powerless well in that situation. I barely did as I snapped at him while Elma had him in a situation where he couldn't lie. I lost my cool, but hopefully it was minor enough to not cause problems for the Watchers or Warband.   I'll need to go to Darrok. And I'll need to check in with Amaiki. I honestly hope Crowntaker arrives soon. I feel cooped up in this city right now.

There is not enough soap
35 Cobanium

It's been a while since I've taken the time to fill this out with a proper entry. I'm a bit rusty, but we'll see how I do.   I'm sitting in my cabin on the airship where Elma has created buckets of water for me to get myself clean. I am waiting for my hair to dry to see if the scent of death still lingers there. I've washed it three times. I will need to get more soap when we reach Silica at this rate.   So there's a lot that's going on. Crowntaker is still not here, though I'm still not sure we have an actual plan. I still don't know how we're going to even force him to fight us, short of creating a title that he wants more than the King of Silica. But I did what I could. Warband is still around, we know more. I'll figure something out or I'll be dead and it won't matter.   Anyway, we went to investigate that cult Darrok told me about. Hylia's druid friends also seemed interested in it. I've seen what the "Essence of Tollomai" looks like now and it's...gross. It's this monster with a human face that was being eaten by this cult as they turned it into the drugs that were going through the city. I think it has something to do with that lady Elma had sent off to Aurum? I don't know. We found that the cultists had literally fallen apart. My boots are still outside the room. I will need to be scrubbing them for hours before I can bring myself to put them back on. They are covered in blood and viscera and even thinking of it makes me want to wretch, now that I'm no longer at the scene. There, I had to keep a brave face and pretend like it was just water. Can't be vomiting on a mission.   I don't know what we learned, except that we're going to have trouble in the city when the high wears off and the shakes kick in. I was a bit surprised that the wizards didn't want to do more with it. They seemed almost as unsure of what they were looking at as I was. You'd think they'd have some idea of what could be done with it besides making it into a drug. As for me, I'm not sure if becoming an addict is worth the catalyzing effect, especially if by the end I'm some mindless starving undead creature that is falling apart.   There's probably bigger problems if the essence of the world is death, anyway.   Anyway, I'll wrap this up here. My hair no longer smells of sweat, blood, and decay, so I think I should probably go check up on the others.
