Jervik the Once-Ascended

Long ago, a young boy studied the ruins of Ancient Si’yla, trying to understand the causes of the Ascended War and what could be done to restore the prosperity of antiquity. His research granted him a deep understanding of magic and machinery alike, but he could find nothing that gave clear cause for the devastation and collapse of society. Even worse, his studies left him afflicted with a condition that he had been desperate to avoid. Entrenched in the lore of lost Si’yla, Jervik ascended.
His life changed immediately. No longer concerned with researching the fall of Si’yla, Jervik focused all of his studies on his disease and ways to cure it before another Ascended, an angry mob, or the Godhunter killed him. In time, Jervik was successful. Through a process that removed his soul from his body, he shed his Ascendancy. Still, Jervik was unable to return to a quiet life of study and contemplation. As an undead who had cured Ascendancy and remained alive (in some senses), he became a celebrity and an idol to those who also didn’t desire power. Jervik vanished from the public eye nearly ten thousand years ago.
Every few years, a rumor starts that Jervik finally died. People speak of his great treasures, entire Si’yl buildings rebuilt and restored to prime functionality. They say his defenses are guarded by ancient Si’yl machines and weaponry unlike any in the current era. Eventually, Jervik will resurface and put a lie to the exaggerated rumors of his demise, but even knowing that the ancient lich is alive hardly tempers the excitement treasure hunters feel to rob his stores.
