Bronach

Bronach is a witch who dabbles in blood magic (iron crafting) and lives in a lichen covered cabin in the woods just north of the Bhanmhor Sliabhraon range.

With the aid of a bracelet gifted to her by her sister, Moriath, that can unlock any Unseelie gate in Faerie or the human realm, Bronach abducts human children and fae creatures and sells them to Unseelie clients. She has a talent for plant magic, passed down from her father.

Introduction to Bronach in the books

The witch stood with her back to me. I’d expected an old crone from a fairy tale, but she looked young, with shining waves of white-gold hair tumbling down her back.

***

While I dashed across the clearing toward the trees, the witch yelled something after me in a language I didn’t understand. Her words boomed and echoed around me, like thunder in a valley, the syllables all harsh edges and scraping sounds.

I hoped Gavin was on his way, but I didn’t dare slow down to look. My foot caught on a root and I tripped, falling to the soft earth. To my horror, the root wrapped around my ankle. More roots crawled across the ground toward me as I frantically kicked to free myself.

Hanna's Inspiration note: Bronach is inspired by the witch in Hansel and Gretel, and is as close to a retelling of that fairytale as I'm ever going to get because...it's not very cozy. Although I do like a good gingerbread house. Also, lichen is often called "witch's hair" which is why I chose to use it for her gate.
