Red Mountains

The Red Mountains are a large range of mountains extending south towards the Caldar River plain from the larger Yellow Mountains to the north.  Beginning in the north and marching in an arch down into the south for more than 300 miles, the Red Mountains are a rugged, barren expanse of terrain that is very difficult to traverse under ideal conditions.  Steep mountain faces and narrow, broken valleys allow for no easy access through or over the range and no natural passes are mapped with any certainty.   Named Krasny Gory in the local Junnharic tongue, these Red Mountains are named to reflect the reddish hue that is seen as the sun settles in the west and lights up the rugged peaks.  Known to be the habitat of many varieties of Dragons, it is also the known home of many Giants.

Geography

A rough and steep range of bare mountains with very few natual passes through them.  Mountain heights of more then 20,000 feet are found within this range, with the tallest being the mighty Gora Metcha (Sword Mountain).  There are numerous places within the range that are tall enough to have ice caps year round.  Valleys and draws within the range are prone to devestating flash floods large enough to move house-sized boulders hundreds of yards down the slopes.

Localized Phenomena

There are numerous areas within this range of mountians were natural hotsprings bring scalding hot water from deep within the earth to the surface.  Some of these springs produce acres of rare compounds and elements that color the landscape in bright yellows, oranges, scarlets and greens.  Some of these hotsprings are rumored to have real healing properties and perhaps magical effects as well.

Climate

Frigidly cold, windy winters with sporadic heavy snows.  Summers are warm, windy and aridly dry.  The spring is the wettest season, with periodic heavy rains from the south dumping inches of rain every hour.  The long, cold winters and dry summers make the vegetation within the range, especially in higher elevations, very sparce.

Fauna & Flora

There are large populations of Hill Giants roaming the range, mainly living off of wild goats, auroch and bison.  These giants are extremely territorial and violently attack any humanoid they encounter without hestitation.  Local Orcs have learned to avoid encounters with these menacing giants at all costs.

Natural Resources

Many scholars believe there is a wealth of untapped resources buried beneath the vast range.  First amongst these resources is iron ore.  The soil and stone washed down out of the heights is a deep, rusty red that indicates the presence of iron in large quantities.
