King's Day
King's Day is a Kingdom-wide holiday celebrated on the birthday of the reigning High King of Imesse. With the current High King Max III, King's Day is celebrated on August 2nd.
King's Day is typically a holiday with no expectation of obligatory labor or work. Hired help can expect to be excused from required duties, or be paid a double wage if the duty is considered necessary or vital. Communities will often hold fairs or open markets at King's Day in hopes of drawing increased business. King's Day is an especially popular time to host tournaments, and one of the largest is held every King's Day at the Crownfield Lists in the City of Scaram.
While King's Day specifically commemorates the birthday of the King, it is also typically at least a three day celebration, and in the case of the tournament at Crownfield, it lasts as long as 6 days.
Traditional food includes cakes, sweetbreads, pastries, biscuits and sweet fruit punches (all dishes that traditional Imessian families would share at household birthdays, but on a much grander scale). Visiting dignitaries from foreign lands are expected to give the celebrant King a gift of some significance, as well.
