Barony of Loman Dur
The Barony of Loman Dur is a small division of the Kingdom of Lesser Imesse, ruled by Lomain as Baron, in addition to being Duke of Lorancourt. Loman Dur has a population of 40,000, with the city of Loman Dur counting 10,000 of those souls. It is comprised of three large briaries, all with busy shipbuilding and port industries generating much business and revenue.
The barony was not included in the grant of land and title to Dogar am Lanni when he was made Duke of Grenwich. This exclusion has been a real source of tension between Lorancourt and Grenwich for the last 16 years. Dogar thinks the barony should be part of his ducal domain, and Lomain refuses to consider giving it up. As a result, Loman Dur has no access to the rest of the kingdom except by sea, as all overland routes must pass through the Duchy of Grenwich. To date, after a small tax is paid to the Duke of Grenwich, all roads across the duchy are open to Loman Dur, but the risk of politically contested access always looms as a possibility for Lomain.
Structure
Lomain rules as Baron in the name of King Mak II. He has three Briars administering large portions of the Barony for him. The northern Briary of Forkton is ruled by Lambert Fielder and the southern Briary of Rosen is ruled by Marten Barret. The Briary of Skye, which includes the City of Loman Dur, is ruled by Stanlin Aldward.
Culture
A busy shipbuilding industry and thriving ports have ballooned the population, and the baronial revenues, to nearly as great as that of the neighboring Duchy of Grenwich. Roads, bridges, ports and town walls are bing constructed all over the barony, and wages are high.
Public Agenda
As is true in all Lomain's domains, defense is a priority in Loman Dur. Walls, keeps, towers and fortified bridges are being constructed up and down the coastal barony.
Assets
There are three busy ports in Loman Dur, the largest of which is the city of Loman Dur itself.
History
Near the end of the Colo War Lomain was made Baron of Loman Dur by Mak II, and the Barony was created from two large briaries located between Grenwich and Ben Doa. In the last 17 years, Lomain has spent tens of thousands of guilders to make the barony as secure as it can be.
Demography and Population
The barony has 40,000 people living within it. 25,000 are Human, 14,000 are Halfling, 800 are Dwarves and 200 are Gnomes.
The largest city in the barony is Loman Dur at 10,000 people with a similar demography as the rest of the barony.
Territories
The Barony is located between the last eighteen miles of the Old Fork River in the north and the White River from the mouth of the Rose River to the Eastern Sea. It covers just over 700 square miles of steep basalt cliffs and narrow sandy beaches in the east to high wind-swept hills and moors as far as 30 miles inland to the west. There are only two bridges carrying roads into and out of the Barony: one large stone arched bridge crossing the Old Fork at Forkton and another, smalled bridge crossing the White River at the village of Stone Valley. These roads give access to the Duchy of Grenwich and are (currently) the only overland access to the rest of Imesse for the Barony.
Military
The Baron has 19 Cos of Foot and Horse ready to defend the barony. Three Companies are assigned to each of the busy ports, and the other ten are spread along the rest of the borders. Both the briars of the barony are experienced veteran commanders and have established fortified points of control all along the duchy border.
Agriculture & Industry
A dozen Halfling communities have sprung up along the coast, all focused on harvesting and managing the abundant seafood available to the barony. Oysters, crabs, clams, mussels, fish, seals and whales are all harvested from the barony's waters and beaches. Of note is a dye-making industry that utilizes the shells of a particular snail found along the local coast that produces a deep and lasting royal blue color that rivals any dye made further to the south. As more of this dye is produced, demand is expected to increase significantly... along with profits.
Three large port towns manage hundreds of vessels worth of cargo every month, and the docks and yards of the towns build dozens of ships per year. Of particular fame are the coastal hulks made at Loman Dur, much appreciated for their cargo capacity and defensibility if attacked. The other two ports are Seashore in the north and Stockton in the south.
There are seven large quarries, a thriving timber industry, sheep and cattle ranches and a busy barrel-making business located in the inland areas of the barony. Farms and orchards are congregated around the river and stream valleys. The largest quarries are at Stone Valley, Topfield and Ridgefield. The timber yards and cooperages are centered on Hillend and Rosen.
Trade & Transport
The vast majority of trade is conducted via the sea, but there are two broad, well travelled roads leading out of the barony and into the Duchy of Grenwich: one moves north along the coast towards Ben Doa, another south along the coast to Borin. The seapots of Loman Dur, Seashore and Stockton have all grown in volume and revenue over the last decade, making the small stretch of rocky coast a very busy place. Ships from ports and cities thousands of miles away routinely load and unload cargos at the growing harbor towns and cities.
Infrastructure
The Baron has ordered the construction of more than 100 miles of new roads that will open up access to the interior of the barony. Areas previously too high up the hillsides or too low into the deep valleys will now be easily accessible to wagons and carts. The nine-mile stretch of open, hilly country between the Smallfork River and the Rose River that constitute the barony's western extent being fortified with a series of eight stout tower houses and associated fortifications. These tower houses are intentionally NOT castles or forts, but are instead homesteads with the ability to defend themselves in the event of attack by a determined enemy.
