Humans

Among the Divine Races Humans are unique. For like the seasons, they are forever changing, never able to rest. Always desiring more whether that be power or freedom.
— Emain Jesiir
Humans are among the youngest of the races in Thessia having been formed by the God Ferun. However, unlike many of the other Divine Races, Humans were freed from their divine tether, when Ferun was slain by the creator gods of the Old Races for his creation of a new Divine Race. This means Humans are not under the influence of their divine creator God, and thus, like many of the New Races are able to choose which Gods they can follow. However, many still possess the ability to cast divine magic. It is unknown why this is still possible.

Description

Morphology

Humans are bipedal standing between 5'4" and 6'2" with weights ranging from 60-80Kg on average. They do not possess any additional limbs beyond the standard pair of arms and legs common among most races in Thessia. Humans are also sexually dimorphic with males growing to be taller and heavier than their female counterparts, along with producing more body hair. Females, however, develop secondary sexual organs used to feed their young

Reproduction

Humans reproduce in a similar way to most creatures with a single male and female required to mate in order to reproduce. Females will then carry the fetus for around 9 months where they will then give birth to 1-2 children however the vast majority of childbirths only involve 1 child.
In comparison to the other Races in Thessia humans are very quick breeders not only due to the time it takes to gestate a child, but also a number of cultural habits which lend to the increase in childbirth and survival. This has resulted in humans often outnumbering other races in the areas they inhabit.

Cross Racial Breeding

Humans are able to breed quite easily with the other Divine Races due to their own divine origin. However, the children of these unions are often ostracised due to the animosity between humans and the other races. However, because of their divine status Humans are unable to breed with the new races.

Planar Mutation

Human lineages can also be affected by Planar Mutation. This mutation results in children being born with traits associated with the plane the mutation came from. The most common mutations originate in the fiendish plane often due to deals made by individual ancestors of the mutated child. These mutations can vary from mild (skin colouration) to severe (changes in limbs).

Growth and Life Cycle

Humans spend the first few years of their lives completely reliant on their parents for survival needing constant attention. After this dependency period, humans enter childhood, where for the next decade of their lives, during which they learn basic skills and communication. Along with this they slowly reduce their dependency on their parents. Another keynote of this childhood face is a rapid increase in height.
After this enters their final growth stage before they become full adults. this adolescent period lasts another decade during which the sexual dimorphism between females and males grows, as both reach their maximum height at around the ages of 22. Around the ages of 16-18 humans will begin to become sexually active, and begin seeking out mates in order to produce children.
After their 2 decades of development, humans are then considered fully matured and will then begin a slow decline until their bodies perish around the age of 80. This puts their life expectancy far below the Old Races and more in line with the New Races.

Variation

Variation in Human appearance is mostly based on the location they are in. Humans living closer to the equator will often have darker skin than those who live closer to the poles. As for hair colour, this varies from pale blond through to browns into black. Some individuals are known to have reddish hues to their hair and in even rarer cases no pigment is found in the hair. Like skin, paler hair colour becomes more common as you move closer to the poles. As for eye colour, there is more variety with variations of blues, greens, and browns being found across all Humans regardless of geographic location.

Major Ancestry Groups

There are 5 major Ancestries of Human. These Ancestries represent semi-distinct groups within the Human race that differ in their language and culture. The Ancestries for Humans are:

  • Thaumen - With close ties to the divine these Humans are known for their many sacred traditions
  • Barite - The most militant of the Humans, with a strong warrior tradition
  • Astana - The only ancestry of Humans who maintained their connection to nature
  • Keran - Famed sailors and explorers these Humans were the first to discover Alvania
  • Haelian - The most numerous of the Humans, known as city builders and skilled merchants

Diet

Humans are omnivores and are thus able to eat most foods. However, the main form of nutrition comes from plants, which is often cultivated with meat making up a smaller part of the diet. This is not true in all cases and consumption levels of meat and plant material are affected by ancestry, location, circumstance and personal choice.
For example, the Astana people often refrain from consuming meat due to their connection to nature. While those of Barite ancestry consume more meat as hunting is an important cultural tradition.

Culture

Language

All humans races expect Thaumen are written using the human script, with Thaumen using the Celestial script. Each ancestry has a number of dialects of their own language which they use internally. However, a number of human languages have high cross-ancestry usage. A notable example of this is Old Thaumen which is used by almost all religious organisations. This is due to the Thaumens bringing over most pre-collapse written history which was written in their language. For trade though Low Haelian is used and is de facto considered the common language of the Human Race.
The major languages are:
  • Thaumen
    • Alvani Thaumen
    • Old Thaumen
    • High Thaumen
    • Low Thaumen
  • Barite
    • Coastal Barite
    • Alvani Barite
  • Astana
    • Old Astana
    • Alvani Astana
  • Keran
    • High Keran
    • Low Keran
  • Haelian
    • High Haelian
    • Low Haelian

Technology

Humans are well known for their technological advancements (baring the Astana who view are sceptical of many new technologies). Notable technologies include the many uses of Lemirus, such as, power, weaponry, and transport. They are currently the only race to use the material in such a diverse manner.
Another key Technological advantage humans have especially over many of the New Races is their infaustructure with Humans being skilled and constructing roads and aqueducts across their territories.

Religion

Being a Divine Race humans are able to commune with the constellations and thus use divine magic. But because their Creator God is dead they are not limited to which gods they can worship as such the religious diversity of Humans is far greater than that of the other Divine Races. Due to their lack of Creator God, humans are also more varied in their interest in religion in general. With some being devoted followers and others paying the bare minimum of respect to the divine.
