Nekatra Mountains

Ghodar planet mountain range

Checking on the Coriolis Discord, I read that the publishers are OK with players recreating tables, figures and data from the RPG source material where the only purpose is the facilitation of playing their game and I hereby promise this is my only intent with this article. Ghodar planet and the nekatra species are from the Coriolis RPG; the details of the mountain range are my own content - Doctor Weather
The Juldizin Demalisi colony lies at the southernmost tip of the Nekatra Mountain Range on Ghodar. From the city the range extends out as a wedge far to the north. The eastern side of this wedge is much steeper than the slightly curving western side but both exhibit a lack of foothills, the mountain rock quickly giving way to the sandy desert below.   The range takes its name from the packs of nekatra that roam freely in its jungles, jungles whose existence is a scientific curiosity on a planet so dry and inhospitable. However, it is only one of many signs of terra-, and even system-, forming throughout Ghodar and moreover seems very stable. The colonists therefore, when entering the mountains, spend much less time questioning the jungle than they do trying to stay safe from the nekatra.

Terraformed valleys

Regularly-shaped valleys dominate the southern region
Much of the northern range seems naturally shaped but the southern region is almost entirely comprised of valleys of the same apporixmate size and shape, each capable of sustaining four human tribes living a subsistence lifestyle.   Valleys are either lush jungle or barren rock
A third of the valleys, predominantly those towards the southern edge of the range, are completely covered in a lush, green jungle, teeming with life. The jungle simply stops at the valley's edges; the slopes above the jungle top and the passes between the valleys are as barren as you would expect for brutal Ghodar climate. This is also true of the remaining two thirds of the valleys, as if someone was creating potential locations for jungle valleys but had only gotten around to filling a percentage of them in so far.   No obvious water source for the jungles
There simply isn't enough water in the mountains to sustain the jungle naturally and yet it looks for all intents and purposes like a brightly-coloured rainforest on another more water-blessed world.   JUMP TO CONTENTS

Nekatra presence

Packs are confined to the jungle valleys
A sufficient number of valleys have been turned to jungle to support a genetically-viable nekatra population. The packs live and hunt within the valleys, only crossing through the passes when there are territorial problems or mating needs.   For the most part maintain an uneasy truce with the mountain tribes
The human natives living in the mountains and the nekatra try to keep out of each other's way. In times of desperation nekatra have been known to attack lone humans but in the main the nekatra can find easier prey elsewhere.   JUMP TO CONTENTS
