TR-249

The most commonly used superconducting material used by the Hyperion Federation.   TR-249 is a very high temperature superconductor with the added advantage of having a high tensile strength. Its critical temperature for superconductivity is over 13 000 K. This allows some HF starships to withstand extreme temperatures, such as orbiting a star at extremely short radii. QENs can easily achieve such temperatures, though, so it is mandatory that all TR-249 superconductors that might be used cannot be under effect from QEN at all.   This material however, when above this critical temperature, has a relatively high electrical resistance. If it was to lose its superconducting property, whatever machine it was used in will likely be destroyed as massive amounts of power will attempt to flow through it which leads to an even more massive buildup of heat. Though this might trip some fire protection units that the HF uses. The resistivity of this material is always lower than that of hardlight which is used as insulation. It is usually kept at a temperature that is safe to touch by most species. This is about 310K. This is done through the use of advanced QEN technoloy, and heat is transported out from the superconductors using the phenomenon of second sound, so even extremely long lengths of TR-249 cable often only require 1 or 2 QEN heat vents, but the HF typically uses many for reduncancy. Although a superconductor, and therefore would still have no resistance regardless of cross sectional area, it is usually made to a diameter of about 2mm2. This is to give it strength and allow people to see it. It's shiny smooth white-blue texture gives it a simple but smooth texture. It is sometimes used as decoration and can double as a faraday cage.
