Western State University

Established as a land grant in 1902 as the Western State School of Natural Resources, with a focus on mining and forestry. It grew to add a normal school, business school, and a department for agriculture (seen as a leader in research on the use of mountain valleys).
The school has since been renamed Western State University when it became incorporated into a statewide educational system. It has expanded its curriculum even further to include degrees in civil, electrical and mechanical engineering, computer sciences, expanded liberal arts in association with teaching, and medical sciences including nursing and psychology. WSU is the smallest of the associated university campuses.

Athletics

The athletic teams of Western State University are nicknamed the Miners and are part of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA), primarily competing in the Frontier Conference. Men's sports include basketball, football, cross country and golf, while women's sports include basketball, golf, cross country and volleyball.
