Scope
The motivation behind building Thenia
Like my other work (
United Britannia and Hibernia), this is a completely self-indulgent project that combines my love of dark academia and magic. I also love mythology, and I'm having a great time weaving Romanian mythology into this project.
The goal of the project
Unlike
United Britannia and Hibernia, I have no set expectations for this world. At this point, it may just be an exercise in (hopefully!) good worldbuilding, but I could see this turning into a bigger project in the future.
Thenia's Unique Selling point
Again, like with my other project, I believe this is a "special to me only" type of project, in that this is not that unique of an idea. We have plenty of stories about magic schools and we have a ton of mythology stories as well (even in the YA genre, which is where I predict this will project will fall). But I'm hoping that my take on those above subjects are unique, and that this can be indulgent for people that like those things, too. I'm not reinventing the wheel, but I really don't want to!
Theme
Genre
Fantasy + Magical Realism; people in this world know magic exists, but only the lucky few possess it.
Reader Experience
Dark Academia all the way; I love that vibe, and I'm sticking to it.
Reader Tone
The tone of this world isn't dark, but has dark overtones (it is meant to be lighter than my other project). The main characters in this project are blessed with
magic, and I want readers to learn the many wonderments of magic with them. However, some dark things will happen, so the tone of this is meant to be somewhere between light and dark.
Focus
Power distribution
Why are some born with magic and others aren't? Why should we allow those with the power (i.e., magic) to control everything, especially when so few have it?
Drama
Cultural
The
religions of the world have always expressed their displeasure in magicians, but now, there's talk of working with various governments to require magicians either be institutionalized or required to work only when the church/government desires it.
The various world governments are rapidly deciding that the existence of magicians is no longer comforting, but instead, frightening. Along with the churches, the governments are considering the future of magicians--without magicians' consent or input.
Personal
The Solomonari are struggling with their identities, as members of that group and has members of their own home countries, many of which do not like magic.
Other
The Solomonari are halfway through their education, and once deep ties between friends are now crumbling, as they turn into competitors.
