What is a Wraith?

A wraith is what happens when the spirit of a person or animal gets corrupted or damaged before death, and is therefore easily missed by the reapers, which causes them to wander aimlessly, stuck between the spectral and physical worlds.
Wraiths are considered a type of ghost.

What causes a Wraith to form?

Wraiths happen when a being is either broken by trauma, for example, due to a specific traumatic death or by a traumatic life. it is possible to heal a broken soul either in life or in death, although it is easiest when someone is still alive. They can also form after having been corrupted, this is usually something that happens during life, for example, werewolf and lesser vampire souls become corrupted, it isn't impossible to cleanse a soul, but it isnt easy, and it is a highly unpleasant experience. werewolf and vampire souls are usually collected by the Ynue who caused them and don't get the chance to become wraiths, but not all corrupted souls are claimed by the Ynue, and those will become wraiths.
Most often wraiths form when they are cursed or if their soul is taken and released by Orog, or they are the souls of those who followed him in life.

Appearance

Wraiths are ghosts who live in the spectral realm, but they are often still tied to their body, and they are able to move it as if they live in it, but defeating the body doesn't actually release the wraith, it just makes them angrier, and they might switch to a new body, forcing the soul to whom it belongs out, and taking it for themselves. This kills the body, and simply gives them a new appearance.

Defeat

The way to defeat wraiths is either by trapping their soul, giving it to Killian, to be cleansed, or to convince a reaper to take them, which is easier said than done, since reapers cant be easily summoned by mortals.
