The Heralds

Champion of the Gods

A herald is a human representative of the gods. Each god has a different herald with different Properties. They are identifiable by certain abilities and personality tendencies, and the powerful mystical abilities they develop later in life. The birth of one of the heralds is a powerful omen that can mean great, but more often, terrible things for the world.

The Chosen

There isn't always a herald, and usually when they are born, more will follow. There have been times when a hundred years passed without a single herald, and times when they were reborn almost immediately. Heralds aren't meant for good or evil, they often have their own agenda, although some shamans learned in the ways of the gods have speculated that their lives are simply meant to steer the world in a specific direction, and that their actions, good or evil, contribute that.

Powers

Each Velen's herald has a unique magical power, that being Soreithra's affinity for flame, or Tauqa's Aquatic qualities. All of their unique abilities somehow relate to the god they represent. However, besides their unique powers, they all have a set of more mundane, shared herald powers. These are simply heightened senses, and increased magical potential, and they are simply better at things. For example, a herald will gain more muscle for the same amount of training, they will pick up new skills faster, etc. These improvements aren't huge, but their variety and flexibility make the herald truly fearsome opponents.

Born to Reign

Not all gods send heralds equally. The most common are Karoush, Aretmi, and Deiwos. Others will send heralds only in times of great need, and thus these are much rarer, such as Morpheus and Nula. But what all heralds have in common, rare or not, is that they and their abilities often get them a place among the leaders of the world, and more than a few of the worlds dynasties can trace their line back to one of the heralds.
They could be considered reincarnations of previous heralds, and as they grow older they will start remembering their past selves. This will only partially affect their personality.   The greatest effect is the one it has on the herald of War, because the first incarnation of this herald went completely insane, and as the herald starts remembering their past life, a process that happens slowly over time, they are doomed to fall into that same insanity.
