Moraia

The Goddess of the Dead

When people fear death, it is because they fear that Moraia, the goddess of the dead, will look unfavorably on them, and they lament their fate should she judge them unworthy of the afterlife. Moraia is the goddess in charge of leading people in death and assisting them in the process of passing over to the realm of the dead. She is a judge and a guide, a helper and a hinderer, the one who waits behind the silver screen.

Influence

She isn't worshipped in the traditional sense of the word; she is venerated, though. People pray to her for forgiveness, they beg for mercy on their souls, they try to live in a way such as not to give her a reason to be displeased, but they build no temples to her, they make her no offerings, nor would she ask for any. They do celebrate the day of death, though. Upon the anniversary of the death of a loved one, people might choose to light a candle at a shrine of the Lady of Death, in thanks for caring for the expired soul.

Afterlife

People worry about being left behind by her, but in reality, she will only do this to the worst of individuals, leaving them as ghosts, doomed to roam the world of the living, unable to rest. When called to guide a soul, she gently weighs the worth of their life in her hands. Should they prove truly evil, she leaves, but should they prove to be good at heart, she will have mercy on them, giving them a chance to repent for their wrongdoings and find peace in the afterlife.

Artifacts

The Cloak of Invisibility has the ability to hide the presence of the wearer from any unwanted onlookers. It doesn't make you vanish entirely; it simply makes the wearer very difficult to notice and makes movement very hard to see. It also has the added effect of giving unaware onlookers the unconscious urge to look somewhere else.   The other is the Ring of the Undead. It is a mysterious trinket that can only be identified by the skull shape on it and its otherwise plain and unknown appearance. When worn, upon death, it sends the wearer back to the world of the living, heals their body as much as required for them to surely live, and then the ring vanishes to reappear somewhere else, for another person, with a different appearance, but still with that same skull on it.

Personality

Moraia is the watchful judge, the one who quietly waits until she is needed to carry the spirits of the dead to the hereafter. She does not do this with malice or joy, but with caring grace and a kind word.
