Human Species in The World of the Guardian Dragon | World Anvil

Human

Human is the most wide-spread sentient race on the Guardian Dragon, inhabiting continents and islands without fear of the effects of weather and magic. They are one of the tree original races in the world, alongside elves and dragons, and the most shor-lived of them. Of all the sentient races in the world, they are the least likely to be able to control magic, but they make up for it with their tenacity and stubborness, thus deserving the respect of many other races.

Physical Traits

In many ways, humans are much like elves, main differences being their rounded ears, smaller in colour palette, and with greater variety on their body types. In addition, humans, mainly men, can grow a beard, but it varies a lot between individuals. Their height has variety depending on their origin, women being on average between 5'4"-5'7" and men 5'8"-5'"10 tall.   Most humans' skin colour is in shades of light and brown, with hair of light, brown, black or red. Most often, their eyes are brown, green, blue, or grey. Occasionally there are people with colours that deviate from the usual, a trait that is often a sign of a non-human ancestor or a connection to the magical currents of the world that is unusually strong for a Human.

Magic

Humans have a significantly weaker connection to magic than many other races on the Guardian Dragon. This doesn't mean they are complitely incapable of harnessing it, and such people are not unheard of: they are more common on the southern hemisphere due to in part the fact that there, elven and human blood have a greater chance of mixing, which gives their offspring a higher chance of connecting with the currents both via study and as an inborn ability. In the lands of Agar humans and elves have kept to their own communities more strongly, which has lead to human mages being more rare.

Learned Magic

Most of the human mages are wizards who've gained their knowledge from books and their more experienced peers. In the lands of Árei they are especially common in Khu'ata's universities, but the wide-spread appreciation of learning has given the same chance to those living in villages and other smaller communities. In Toshan, where people have a higher chance of connecting with the magical currents, those who have learned to control them are somewhat common. Relatively few advance past simple spells, however, which played a part in wizard Ishan's rise to power, as he didn't face much opposition.   In the lands of Agar learned magic is often inherited as oral teachings especially in Tribelands, where the natural magic of druids is most common. In Ager, magic is found mostly in the noble families that have married mages to themselves, their heirs as well as other relatives. Bridge, much like Khu'ata, is dedicated to learned magic, though it's rare for humans to find their way there, and in Lemena, the same magic is mainly encountered among the religious circles.

Inborn Magic

If a human has an inner connection to the magical currents, it's usually a sign of elven blood. The Heart of the World and in Lemena, in the area of the former country of Omogta close to western border, offer the highest chance of exceptions to this as these areas are infused with unually strong natural magics that may affect a child even before their birth. It's extremely important for these people to practice their skills, as in many cases their strength can be compared to that of elves, meaning the magic could well get out of control.   In Ager, the inborn magic is mostly found in the noble families that have married both human mages and elves for generations in hopes of gaining the power and respect magic brings with it.

Naming

There is a lot of variety in the names of humans, and both the homeland and the family culture affect the choices. Nyverian names are not uncommon, but rarer than among many other races.
