Neriv

Unaging, uncanny, and unforgettable, the Halori Empire officially considered the Nerivs exterminated until only a few hundred years ago, when a few small pockets of them were discovered deep within the forests of Halor.   Nerivs are said to be the first creations of the Old Gods, sentinels and watchers over the creation that they established. Although they vaguely resemble the average Man, a Neriv is much different at their heart.   A Neriv grows to adulthood over the course of about twenty years, not that far a pace from humans, but they live to ages far beyond most other mortals. While the average Man may live for around a hundred years, each Neriv undergoes a constant process of metamorphosis and rebirth. If left uninterrupted, the Neriv will be effectively immortal.   There are downsides to this immortality. A Neriv can only remember their first life–a period of about 80 years–and their current life (subsequent "lives" last for 20-40 years, depending on stress and circumstances) in any detail. Echoes of their past lives occasionally surface, but in general a Neriv is no more well-learned and capable than most other mortals.   A young Neriv may be indistinguishable from a Man, except for small tells like the sharpening of fingers into talons and eyes that do not blink due to an invisible nictitating membrane. As a Neriv undergoes further metamorphoses, they may change dramatically, retaining a humanoid stance and limbs, but gaining other features based on their environments and aspirations.   Nerivs have to be careful before a metamorphosis to avoid corruption, or they risk debilitation or transformation into monstrous creatures. While their minds typically remain intact, these outcasts are known for violent tendencies, the result of a disconnect between their lives.   Before they were protected by the laws of the Halori Empire, Nerivs were valued for the ability to be made into reagents for Philosopher's Stones.

Talents

Memories of a Forgotten Life (2)

This talent is only available to Nerivs who have gone through more than two metamorphoses.   Most Nerivs remember little, if anything, from their "middle lives" but you have never been like the others. One life was particularly momentous in your development into who you are now, and it remains vivid, if distant, in your memory.   Once per session, the Neriv may add a Specialization that provides an experience bonus equal to half that of their greatest Specialization (so a Neriv with a +15 in their highest bonus would gain a +7 bonus to this new Specialization). The Specialization created in this way lasts until this ability is used again.

Metamorphosis (1)

The Neriv has reached a point in their development where they have become a creature that is distinct from any other living thing on the planet. They gain a +5 bonus to a chosen non-derived attribute, but suffer a -5 penalty to another attribute.

Natural Magician (1)

Whenever the Neriv would pay experience to gain a talent associated with a magical tradition or gain a new magical ability, they spend one less XP to do so.
