Magic: Occult

Magicians across Halor usually belong to one of three magical schools: Artifice , Sorcery, or the occult arts.   The occult arts have never been publicly sanctioned by any of the major institutions of Halor, though some other places once within reach of traders and explorers practiced occultism regularly. These practitioners taught their trade to returning Halori, and the occult arts quickly became popular among hedge mages and rebels.   Occultists draw contracts with the universe, usurping the role of the gods. This makes them incredibly powerful, since once their magic is in force they do not need to do anything to sustain it, but it also makes them prone to fits of madness as they attempt to build new schema in their minds of how they want the world to be. The perception of power also causes them to fall into delusions of grandeur.   Beyond this, the occultists need power just as the gods need power. Many occultists pose as New Gods, but some are open about their nature and practices. Learning to take power from sacrifices, they become successful at the cost of their souls. Those who work alone, in secret, exert terrible tolls on their bodies and their surroundings, in addition to the mental ravages of occultism.   Scholars have noticed that the decay that occultists undergo doesn't actually seem to be pushing them toward the natural end of their mortal forms, but rather toward some alien, distal, form. This makes occultists easily identifiable to those who know what they will change into, and the Church of the Unsung God will send witch hunters after them.
