Magic: Artifice

Magicians across Halor usually belong to one of three magical schools: Artifice, Sorcery, or the occult arts.   Artifice is both the safest and most common form of magic, and almost everyone has some minor skill in using the artifacts and spells created using the metaphysical foundations that it taps into.   Artifice works by identifying the patterns of creation and assessing the essential nature that underlies their form. Flames, for instance, have a particular essence that can be distilled into motion, heat, and chaos. A master artificer will draw out these essential patterns in the form of arcana.   There are more than five thousand arcana in use throughout the Halori Empire, so attempting to identify them all would be an exercise in futility. However, each arcana is tied to a series of phenomena, stored in writing as runes and sigils, or in the form of incantations using a complicated series of utterances.   Artifice is not actually a universal art; artificers from foreign lands practice the same magic in different ways. Rather, it is a standardized method of defying the laws of reality. Artifice is passed down from master to pupil; novices learn to invoke the runes and incantations of the masters, while the most advanced artificers create new spells and artifacts imbued with magic.   The limitation of artifice is that it is dependent on memory or writing, and the users' energy. All of these things can be damaged or decay over time, leading to a constantly diminishing level of power in excessive practitioners.
