The 72 Gaelics

The 72 Gaelics refers to the original 72 members of the military unit created by the City-State of Syom’skit-Ngthefl in its conflict against Mecha. Centuries ago, the city-state found itself unable to compete with Mecha in its conflict and was quickly loosing with estimates being less than a year before having to either surrender or be destroyed. In a last ditch effort, the magical elite of the city decided to take its most elite unit of fighters, and bind their souls to constructs developed for the war. Unbeknownst to these warriors, it was irreversable and a full third of the unit was simply destroyed in the conversion, their souls obliterated. Of the 46 that successfully had their souls bound to the war machines, only 17 survived the conflict to its stalemate conclusion.

Upon their return, there was no parade or celebration and when the unit sought to return to their bodies, their leaders had to finally admit that there was no way they could return. Further, this secret was known by the majority of the population. One of the '72' as they had become known went insane, destroying half the royal palace before finally being destroyed itself. The leader of the unit, known as Dandelo, warned the city that they would no longer protect them, that they would leave on their own accord, but that one day there would be a reckoning. Barely controlling his rage, the remaining 16 left the city and soon after split apart journeying to their own whims.

The city-state of Syom’skit-Ngthefl to this day, carries with it the knowledge of its betrayal. Given the long life of the gnomes, either the direct descendants or their children are still alive and many still remember the stain to their honor.
