Milic & Wosternak

“Violence is never the answer, but sometimes it is the only option.” –Zak Hasic, PLFM Captain

Written by WEASEL OF ROME

Joint Kingdom of Milic & Wosternak

Structure

While a two state solution was demanded by Oyapilic upon the release of Milic & Wosternak, the failing state was in no position to enforce it. Milic recognizes their own National Parliament as the sole authority in Milic, while the Royal Family of Wosternak recognizes only its own hegemony over both states.

Culture

The people of Milic are few in number but strong in will, and have fought tooth and nail for almost two thousand years for their independence from multiple oppressors. They have a fierce sense of ethnic identity, and a history of victimization fuels their desire of self-reliance. The people of Wosternak have a hatred for the people of Milic due to their refusal to accept Wosternak as the dominant national power. The people of Wosternak and their blood feud with the Milic is the most brutal in the region. Forced twice into a conjoined state, the Wosternak Royal Family has mostly tried to enforce its role as steward of the nation through force, which has been met with fierce resistance by an open rebellion from the Milic minority.

History

• 318 – The Kingdom of Milic declares a ceasefire with Harajasic and Wosternak, solidifying its position as its own sovereign state for the Milic people.   • 528–729 – The Kingdoms of Milic and Wosternak are engaged in a series of bloody yet inconclusive conflicts known as the “Two Centuries War.”   • 750–795 – Economic depression affects the entire region, raising ethnic tensions to an all-time high as different ethnic groups are blamed for the hardship. To the present day, these tensions have not dissipated. The event is known as the Depression of 750.   • 800-815 – War between Transpovania and The Kingdom of Wosternak breaks out over disputed lands.   • 815 – Transpovania and Wosternak sign a ceasefire to the inconclusive conflict.   • 891 – The Battle of Belamir marks the end of what the Sergradic refer to as “The First Milic War” as Milic and Harajasic forces surrender to Sergrade. King Baast of Harajasic and his sole heir are killed in the fighting.   • 891 – The Treaty of Jarasevic
  • o The Princedom of Sergrade annexes Harajasic.
  • o The Princedom of Sergrade annexes North Milic.
  • o Milic and Wosternak are ordered to merge into a single nation by 901 with Wosternak as steward.
• 895 – The Joint Kingdom of Milic & Wosternak is formed despite mass protests of the Treaty of Jarasevic in Milic.   • 899 – Milic declares independence from Wosternak sparking a civil war fought along ethnic lines between the former Kingdoms of Milic and Wosternak.   • 901 – The Kingdom of Sergrade invades Milic & Wosternak citing their failure to adhere to the single state mandate outlined in the Treaty of Jarasevic as casus belli.   • 902 – Prince Viktor Plizny of Sergrade marries Princess Elza of Wosternak, and an alliance is formed between the two factions.   • 904 – Milic surrenders to Sergrade and Wosternak, ending the Second Milic War.   • 904 – The Treaty of Milotic
  • o Sergrade annexes Milic.
  • o Sergrade and Wosternak will conjoin into one state with Sergrade as steward.
  • o Former Wosternak forces will occupy former Milic lands until 910.
• 906 – The Milic Royal Family is executed on Sergradic orders, sparking riots in former Milic territory. The riots are quickly put down by the former Wosternak troops.   • 921-937 – Many members of the Wosternak royal family are killed in a series of accidents. Some consider foul play on the part of the Plizny family of Sergrade.   • 940 – A petition for Milic independence is denied by the crown.   • 1016 – A short lived rebellion in Milic is quickly destroyed by Sergradic forces.   • 1019-1021 – A deadly plague erupts across the land, killing hundreds of thousands.   • 1024 – Reports of state-sponsored ethnic cleansings emerge from the lands of former Milic, Harajasic, and Rowic, targeting multiple ethnic groups. The Sergradic government denies involvement. Transpovania and Polsawa demand rights to investigate, but are denied.   • 1255 – Ethnic tensions arise in Milic and Wosternak.   • 1258 – The Joint Kingdom of Milic & Wosternak is released from Oyapilic and granted independence under terms similar to the 891 Treaty of Jarasevic.   • 1260 – The Popular Liberation Front of Milic (PLFM) declares independence from the Joint Kingdom and begins a civil war with Wosternak.   • 1263 – Harajasic and Wosternak forces begin border skirmishes over disputed regions.

Military

While Wosternak maintains a semi-professional standing army like other Pilic states, most of the fighting done by Milic is done by the Popular Liberation Front of Milic (PLFM). The PLFM is a citizens’ militia that has actually grown larger than the Milic national army due to its efficiency and effectiveness in fighting Wosternak forces. It is rumored that they are being supplied and armed by the Rowic government, but Rowic has repeatedly denied the claims.

Foreign Relations

Milic is primarily focused on self-preservation, while Wosternak maintains a more high profile diplomatic presence. Tensions with Transpovania are high and border skirmishes with Harajasic have weakened Wosternak’s fighting capabilities, though Wosternak maintains uncharacteristically friendly relations with Sergrade by regional standards.

Agriculture & Industry

The people of Milic largely subside on farming and fishing. Wosternak is largely agrarian as well, but boasts an extremely effective tax collecting service that has been the bane of the Milic middle class for centuries.

Trade & Transport

Milic has always had the potential to build a strong merchant economy with access to the sea, but due to the volatile state of the region and other destabilizing factors has never been able to realize the actualization of these goals.
