Lumneli Species in The Witch-Star Theorem | World Anvil

Lumneli

Many look down on the Lumneli. As the posterchild of the poor and homeless, or as a public nuisance. A nomadic people by necessity, they can be found in all corners of the galaxy. Usually in small groups, but sometimes as large flotillas running trade throughout civilized space or exploring the uncharted regions.   An evolutionarily unique species, only suited to life on their home planet, even those that have traveled the Void from end to end have rarely seen what one looks like under their suits. Be it open space or the most beautiful garden world, their cells die upon contact with what other species would call 'clean' air.   Born on Panvip, the Lumneli adapted to a unique kind of microbial life that permeates everything on the planet. The atmosphere, the liquid oceans, the plant and animal life, and every other form of matter on the planet. To be on the surface of Panvip is to be exposed, but luckily most every other species is largely unharmed by it. They have evolved to coexist with the microbes. So much so that they can't live without them. When exposed to a standard atmosphere made up of the components that made up Ponvip's, the microbes die, and the individual's cells soon after.   To make life function outside of their own planet, they must either remain inside of their specially designed environmental suits at all hours of the day or spend the necessary time and resources to cultivate an environment in which the microbial life they need to survive can also live. Which of course also precludes any other type of life form from easily existing within close proximity.   Something that has become ever harder to manage since the destruction of Panvip.   It was not terribly dramatic. It wasn't some end-of-days threat like a horde of demons, an invasion of intelligent constructs from Darkspace, or something they had done to themselves like a nuclear war or mining out the core of their planet. And it wasn't a surprise either. About the only solace they had in at the time.   Panvip's star, already a giant, was reaching the end of its life and was growing larger. Signaling it's imminent collapse and subsequent transformation into a black hole. In a massive project requiring the help of three other prominent races, the Lumneli evacuated their homeworld, it's people, it's plants and animals, and as much of the microbial life necessary to their survival that they could tag and bag, all to the massive City-ships they had constructed. Larger than the majority of ships in service today, and impractical as anything except permanent colony ships, these ships are the last bastion of Lumneli. The only places they can reliably cultivate the microbial life they need. And the home to the vast majority of their species.

Basic Information

Anatomy

Humanoid, their structure and build are very similar to humans.   On the middle ground of strength and dexterity when compared to known species, they'd be pretty easy to lose in a crowd, if it wasn't for the suits.   With a skeletal structure that is semi-dense and muscle development on par with humanity, they won't be winning an arm wrestle with a Jakkaxi any time soon.

Biological Traits

Males tend to be quite beanpole like. Thin arms and legs, and relatively narrow-shouldered.    Females on the other hand are still narrow-shouldered, but with wider hips and thicker legs.

Genetics and Reproduction

While their reproduction is on par with human reproduction, it is hampered by their suits. As one might imagine, the fact that they need their own atmosphere to stay alive can make it highly problematic to attempt to conceive anywhere but their own colonies and Cityships.    Not to mention the issues of interspecies breeding, but that's a whole other barrel of worms.

Growth Rate & Stages

Growth rates have somewhat slowed since the loss of their home planet, and no one is quite sure why. Whatever the reason, they now reach physical maturity after 18.

Ecology and Habitats

Ironically, the Lumneli are by far the most flexible known species, habitat wise. As long as they have access to the equipment they need to maintain their suits and their internal environments, they can live practically anywhere, even in a complete vacuum if push came to shove.

Dietary Needs and Habits

Omnivorous, their diet consists mainly of fish and fruit. While many people believe that they cannot eat normal food, that is incorrect making their growth and acquisition of foodstuffs one of a very short list of easy undertakings the species has on it's plate.

Additional Information

Social Structure

While almost all Lumneli feel an intense loyalty to their species they tend to structure themselves in a way that could be described as tribal groups. Though the exact form is unique, in the way that they organize themselves around their ships. The captain of a ship holds the most preeminent position, while other positions can be thought of as officers. The First Mate, Master Gunner, Chef (a more expansive role that the translation imparts, and Boson are all pretty standard titles, though every ship is different.    While the captain of a ship does, in fact, hold most of the power, they are not cemented in their seat either. Ships handle abuse of power differently, but they can do anything from a simple vote to a coup de tat.   It should be said that a ship's crew is the most basic unit of their social structure, and one can accrue political clout and plain old power by bringing other ships under their banner. Those that gather their own fleets have a variety of titles, but the most common and recognizable is that of Admiral.

103 IQ

Perception and Sensory Capabilities

Average sensory abilities, according to the Lumneli themselves, but often hindered by their suits. This can be mitigated slightly or totally by more advanced Artifice techniques.
