Jakkax Species in The Witch-Star Theorem | World Anvil

Jakkax

Large and built like tanks from head to toe, the Jakkax are one of the toughest races in the known galaxy. Resistant enough to put most men-at-arms quaking in their boots, even if the Jakkac were stripped down to their skivvies.
Their boney plates cut a distinctive figure on whatever battlefield they are on, and provide a great deal of protection against even Slug Throwers.
With a reputation for being hard if not impossible to put down quickly, they are practically ready-made soldiers and bodyguards due to their redundant organs and ability to heal most wounds if given enough time. They are tenacious. Their endurance allowing them to pursue their quarry over great distances, and able to stay in a firefight for longer.
Born on the planet Unkeon, the Jakkaxi formed a martial society based around the hunting of their homes native life. Disputes were, and are, often resolved by a hunting challenge. When things couldn't be resolved that way, the Jakkaxi tribes would make war on each other over the scant resources on the planet. These conflicts were brutal, each side attempting to go for the throat, but remained drawn out due to the natural survivability of the species.
They did not develop Void travel on their own, being raised up by an already Void-capable species, but they used it to their advantage as best they could. Quickly spreading around the galaxy, and taking in it's challenges and fights. It is not uncommon to hear of a stranded crew being rescued by a squad of Jakkaxi hunters on some baren frontier world or of the pit fighter that has no interest in fighting sentients, but single handed takes on the largest beasts the arena can throw at them.

Basic Information

Anatomy

Following a bipedal bone structure, the Jakkax grow much larger than the average human.    Dense muscle growth across the body, with an emphasis on the arms, legs, and neck. All the while, the most notable feature is the bone plates that encase their body in another study layer of natural armor.

Genetics and Reproduction

Mating for life, a pairing can produce an average of six children per clutch.    Jakkaxi children complete the first section of their gestation within their mother, before being birthed and spending about a year incapable of locomotion under their own power.

Growth Rate & Stages

Once born, the infantile Jakkax will spend about a year very close at hand to, or even on their mother. Relying on her to protect them until their outer plates actually harden and start to provide protection.   After that, the children will start to work their way to total independence, learning to fight and hunt for their survival the whole way.

Ecology and Habitats

A warm and semi-arid environment is most suited to them.

Dietary Needs and Habits

Carnivorous, with the species almost universally hunting to feed themselves.   A large caloric intake is required to maintain a healthy lifestyle, while a conversely small amount of water is needed.

Additional Information

Social Structure

Jakkaxi society follows a tribal mentality, with many families falling under the rule of a warlord whose power is based entirely on their ability to enforce their authority with military might.    Any position can be traded or usurped by the issuing of a challenge, and subsequently winning said challenge. There is a bit more nuance to it, but that is steeped in tribal traditions that can vary greatly from tribe to tribe.

Facial characteristics

Mostly flat, with no protruding structures like a cartilaginous nose or ears.    Diamond-shaped with four major plates split between the forehead and the cheeks, interspersed with smaller plates that allow for flexibility of the facial muscles.

Average Intelligence

An IQ of 93.

Perception and Sensory Capabilities

While their eye sight is average in the grand scheme of Void capable species, they have an incredible sense of hearing, though it does not act in the way that hearing is commonly accepted to operate. Deep within their sinuses is a bony structure that acts as a sort of subsonic sound generator.

Naming Traditions

Short and to the point, Jakkaxi names are generally one or two syllables, including their clan name.
