Town Cleric

Background

Cleric is the name for someone who has dedicated their life to working for The Protector as part of the Religion of The Towns.   Clerics are considered to be the representatives of The Protector inside a community and are believed to receive orders directly from him. They are, of course, all men, as men are less likely to be corrupted by The Forces than women are.   Clerics lead sermons on the word of The Protector and help lead others away from The Forces with whatever means they deem necessary.

History

The role of Town Cleric was first created after the initial construction of The Old Church, Stoneham Town. Until this point, the Townsfolk had followed The Protector's Cleric with some other people in leadership but undefined roles.
With the establishment of more Towns beyond Stoneham Town, it quickly became clear that The Protector's Cleric couldn't be everywhere at once. A new role was created when he received a vision from The Protector telling him to assign a Cleric to each town.
So a competition was held amongst those who had proven their dedication to The Protector and the Towns were divided up amongst them.

The Role

The Town Cleric is a position held by a single cleric in each town. The Town Cleric is responsible for the spiritual wellbeing of a town and they report ultimately to The Protector's Cleric.

Responsibilities

Unlike The Protector's Cleric, the Town Cleric has a much more defined remit of responsibility. He oversees the spiritual well-being and moral instruction of those living within the Walls of the Town he lives in. This includes:
  • Holding regular sermons
  • Giving advice and counsel
  • Blessing or cleansing those who require it
  • Reporting to any Elder Clerics and The Protector's Cleric

Town Cleric's Wife

Due to his powerful position within the Social Hierarchy of Townsfolk, the Town Cleric is often the most eligible man in the Town. The position of his wife is taken very seriously, as this likely makes her the most influential woman in the Town.   The Town Cleric's Wife must therefore be beyond reproach. She must exemplify The Angels and shine glory upon her husband in everything he does. She must set an example that other women want to follow and must never falter either in her devotion to The Protector or her husband.

In The Thick Of It

Vices

  • Gambling
  • Drinking
  • Smoking
  • Fornicating
  • Glutony
  • Hedonism
Naturally, in order to help the people of his Town and understand the temptations and The Forces that they face, the Town Cleric must throw himself into all the vices which so plague any society.   A good Town Cleric partakes in such vices regularly, putting himself and his soul in harm's way, facing the dangers his congregation battle against, so that he may lighten their load and teach them better how to avoid such things.

Well, that’s a very convenient perspective, that the Town Cleric has to sin regularly to stay close to the people...

'Naturally, in order to help the people of his Town and understand the temptations and The Forces that they face, the Town Cleric must throw himself into all the vices which so plague any society.'   Mmmm, naturally...   I don't think I'd envy his wife, honestly.
