The blunderbuss is exclusively used by the Arms of The Protector, the armed guard who work for the Religion of The Towns and protect The Protector's Cleric. The weapon is famously the most deadly form of protection known to the Townsfolks.

The image of the blunderbuss has become somewhat synonymous with the infamously dangerous Arms of The Protector. Within certain circles there is an ongoing joke that it is such a deadly weapon that the Arms don't have to fire it; just seeing it is enough of a deterrent.

Technology

Blunderbuss uses Firearms technology, which originates from the gunpowder used by Nomads which was then developed by Townsfolks to become more deadly.
Of all firearms, the blunderbuss is by far the most advanced, firing a cache of small lead balls all at once, rather than a single projectile at a time. This was developed by experimentation carried out by the Arms of The Protector while they were looking for other things they could use within their firearms. This was a lengthy process, first discovering that multiple projectiles could be used and secondly designing a muzzle that is deliberately slightly flared to increase the speed at which the projectile is fired.
