The Place of lost Words

The Place of Lost Words

For ever let this place be a cry of despair and a warning to humanity Where the Nazis Murdered about one and a half million men, women and children, mainly Jews from various countries of Europe. Auschwitz-Birkenau 1940-1945
Deep in the ruins of the Forest of the dead is a glade, roughly 100 meters long and scattered with stones bearing inscriptions. 23 of these inscriptions remain all in languages that are dead in the 3rd age. A very select few have ever read the stones as the journey is difficult, and all those who have, left changed.
This monument, which has weathered thousands of years untouched, is the only place in the Forest of the Dead that even the undead do not tread. It is a place of absolute null force. A silent scream and a scar carved into the fabric of reality because of the terrible tragedy that took place on that spot in the second age.
Some say that reading the words there will unlock the secrets of the 2nd age and all that have reviewed the words though mystical means have left the encounter deeply changed and unwilling or unable to speak about what happened.

Purpose / Function

The original purpose of the site is thought to have been a university or large city in the 2nd Age, very few people have seen the monument as it is located in the heart of the Forest of the dead.
The words inscribed there are in 23 separate languages all of which are uninteligable without the use of magic. When one does use magic to translate the glyphs they undergo a change and leave the place reverent and solemnly silent about what they mean.

Alterations

The largest alteration to the site was the addition of Magic, this had a strange effect causing strange mystical affects that transformed the monument, making it immutable, a place in time and space that would never change, as if reality itself wanted never to forget.

Architecture

A series of piled up stone blocks (spread over about 300 feet), dominated by one higher block, about 15 feet high. On this block there is an inverted triangle. On the cobblestone platform in front of the monument there are 23 bronze plaques with inscriptions in several different languages

History

Little is known about the history of the monument, only having been witnessed by the few individuals discovered the monument, and bothered to check the inscriptions with magic.
When that happens they are shown the history of that monument and all the things surrounding it. None of them have left that experience unchanged.

Author's Notes

As a note: This is one of many of the relics of the second age that exist in the game. I wanted to explore some of the actual history of Europe with these holdovers, and this was no exception. I always suggest caution and doing your research before including things like this in your games, and check in with your players before you put them into the story to make sure everyone is okay with it!
