Jewel Box
The Jewel Box is a meritocratic society made up of elites who fled the Empire and attempted to create an ideal society with terraforming. Each 'planet' of the Jewel Box is actually two which orbit one another (a little like Pluto and Charon).
The Pairs are: Ruby-Pyrope, Amber-Carnelian, Citrine-Topaz, Jade-Malachite, Sapphire-Lazuli, Iolite-Amethyst, Obsidian-Onyx, and Quartz-Diamond.

History
Shortly (in galactic terms) after the development of FTL travel, a group of the elite and idealists from all across the Empire came together. They were dissatisfied with the Empire. The Emperor was not a bad man, but the Empire was poorly-ruled and they disliked the autocracy.
And so, with the bemused blessings of the emperor, they traveled to the edges of Empire space and terraformed a solar system. With advanced satellite arrays to maintain the idyllic climate of each planet, they made their own paradise. They used technology to select only the best and brightest to create laws and represent their people.
As a constructed nation, the Jewel Box does not have a common language of its own. The people speak a combination of galactic languages.
