Republican Guard

The Republican Guard are the personal guard retinue who directly serve the Prince-Mayor of Frankonia. Whilst their main duty is to defend their charge, they are also tasked with protecting central institutions of the Golden Republic, such as embassies and consulates, and in limited law enforcement.

Duties and Insignia

Commonly found guarding Frankonian embassies and patrolling Ponvarus itself, these men and women are the most visible military unit of Frankonia (the state-contracted condottieri companies are stationed outside urban areas), though their responsibilities are broader than that: all Guards are schooled in, and possess a great understanding of, the Constitution of Liberty and Equality. However, only the specialised Guard Justiciars are qualified field judges, who act with the authority of the High Court within areas under Frankonian jurisdiction; they are normally the commanders of Guard detachments and always carry an abridged version of the Constitution itself. A small number of Guards also serve as full-time military attachés to the Golden Legion. These Praetorians, as they are called, are nominally posted to handle the legions' military-legal matters and assist in regular training, but their own training and equipment functionally renders them the elite cohorts of each legion. The Guards' coat of arms is a golden scale enveloped by an olive crest on a blue shield; the scale symbolising their judicial duties, the crest being a traditional decorative icon for illustrious Frankonian institutions, and blue is the traditional ceremonial colour of the high offices of the Republic. Regular Guards wear half-plate over red cloth, with blue sashes and plumed helmets, whilst Praetorians wear gold-trimmed full-plate armour with blue cloth.
