Finr
Any reasonable person might expect that a community built in the boughs of trees would be little more than a rough village. Of course, these are no ordinary trees and this is no ordinary community. This is Finr, capital of the Kingdom-in-the-Boughs.
Demographics
The city of Finr is populated primarily by tabaxi, although a large population of tamblin also exists there. Gnolls are an especially prominent minority, and many of the city's citizens are ursil.
There are a large amount of visitors that make their way through the city, as well. Many are merchants, usually gnolls. The mysterious lands surrounding Finr attracts a great many adventurers of diverse and exotic races, some even from Amaun.
Government
As the capital of the Kingdom-in-the-Boughs, the city is naturally ruled by the king. He rules with absolute control. Unfortunately, this makes things in Finr far from stable from a strictly law-and-order standpoint as most Boughan monarchs are far from stable.
The city is also home to many of the kingdom's noble families. Due to the fact that each one needs to keep their titles, that makes the capital ground zero for incredible amounts of deadly intrigue between them. This is enough to both keep visiting adventurers gainfully employed, and see them dead on a regular basis.
Defences
As with any community in the Kingdom-in-the-Boughs, Finr's primary defense is its location. It is built in the trees hundreds of feet from the forest floor. The forest, itself presents a great deal of danger, infested as it is with deadly creatures.
Any army intending to invade would have to climb a prohibitively long distance to reach the city. If an army invades by the Tree-Roads, however the defenders are more than willing to destroy them, cutting themselves off from attack. The tabaxi, who don't usually use these roads, won't be disadvantaged in any way.
If an invading force were to somehow overcome these nearly insurmountable obstacles, they would actually have a fairly easy time taking the city. The Boughans are not militaristic, and those who are warriors tend towards hit-and-run tactics. The capital would likely depend on hired adventurers to do much of the fighting.
Industry & Trade
Finr is among the finest producers of all things wood. This is only natural, as if there was any resource they have in abundance in the great city it is wood. This makes woodcarvers great and respected artisans. These folk create all manner of things ranging from bows to furniture to artwork.
Finr's location is also a liability in that there are a great many goods the people can't make themselves. These items, such as metalworks and glass are in high demand. Such things are imported in large numbers, particularly from Voror.
The prevelance of adventurers also provides a lot of opportunity for an enterprising trader. Such folk often have needs that aren't easily met. This provides a surprisingly thriving trade for minor magics such as scrolls and potions.
Infrastructure
Finr is primarily notable for being the hub for all the Tree-Roads of the Kingdom-in-the-Boughs. This has led to a great deal of growth. Its location in the branches is ideal for expansion, as this expansion can occur three dimensionally.
This makes the city's layout very unusual. There are four layers built on top of one another, with the wealthier districts on top and getting generally poorer, the lower they get. Each layer is practically a city in and of itself, with all the ammenies needed for life.
The city gets its water from a series of raincatchers above the roofs on top. Due to the humid climate, this provides more than enough water. All the city's waste is moved to the bottom and thrown off the side. There is a significant population of otygughs on the forest floor that feed on it, keeping the area sanitary.
History
The now-impressive city of Finr originally began as a simple tribal village. While most tabaxi of the time were still nomadic, the people of Finr had settled in their location. This village soon grew into a true community. Others soon followed as the fledgling town began to prosper.
As these communities began to establish themselves, they slowly began to cooperate, as well. Eventually they became a nation, and this kingdom in the boughs needed a capital. As the oldest and most prosperous community, Finr was the natural choice.
The city stood unconquered for centuries, not due to uninterrupted peace, but because none of their enemies could actually attack it. The townspeople began to believe their city was completely untouchable. This belief would not last.
In the Second Rising, the mind flayers used their mental abilities to enslave a large portion of the skirmishers protecting the city, as well as the elevator operators. Before anyone knew what was happening, the city's own defenders turned against it, and cut off all retreat. By the time the mind flayers had even set foot in Finr, the city was already theirs.
The population was divided into those usable as thralls, and those who would be used for food or the spawning of new mind flayers. Countless were killed, either during the beasts' culling or during the feeble attempts at resistance. It seemed there was no hope, but then a scream rang out through the minds of all beings, and the mind flayers and their slaves retreated underground.
The Kingdom-in-the-Boughs was in shambles. While everyone wanted to rebuild back to their former glory, there was no more leadership left in the the kingdom. The fighting over the throne began almost immediately and didn't stop for over a century.
The kingdom and its capital were rebuilt, and stronger than ever. The Third Rising threatened the city once again. The mind flayers attempted the same tactic again, but their control over the city's defenders was not so absolute. The fighting was hard, but the beasts and their slaves were kept at bay.
Architecture
The city's buildings are constructed of woven branches held together by a resin mortar. Smaller and thinner branches are preferred, as larger ones are typically used to produce the other goods for which the city is known.
These structures are built on platforms made from the same thin branches, but woven together twice as thick and very securely. These massive circular platforms are connected via a series of suspension bridges.
