Defiance
The mithril longsword of Eldain Mal'atre looks much like any other weapon of elvish make: beautiful to look at but otherwise unimpressive. A gem rests in the hilt whose appearance shifts based on the element it channels, which normally appears as a clear diamond. A flowing rune is carved into the hilt and worked in silver in the black leather of its scabbard. In a language far more ancient than that of today's elves, it reads "Defiance".
History
Among the Sentinels of Iv'arill, it was traditional to gift new apprentices with a sword to symbolize their dedication to the protection of the isle of Iv'arill. Defiance began simply as one of these weapons, unremarkable compared to the others, much like the man who would wield it.
In the traditions of the swordwizards of the Ancient Elven Empire, these apprentices would name their swords in the language of old. This blade's wielder, Eldain was a simple druid, quite different from the nobles in his class. None believed he was worthy of joining them. Eager to prove them wrong, he named his sword "Vilt'cassen"-- "Defiance" in the common tongue.
The sword remained with Eldain during all of his adventures, even after his failure from his training. He continued adding enchantments to the weapon as he went. Eventually, this became nothing less than a legendary weapon, as it clashed with ever greater enemies, culminating with the duel with Ansarien atop the Talran Academy of Magic.
Significance
The weapon of Eldain Mal'atre is as famous as the wizard, himself, and with it he has slain countless foes.
It has been wielded by none other, and he has wielded no other weapon. Like it's wielder, it has come to symbolize the difficult path of the warrior-wizard.
It is also known for its relationship with the glaive Dominion, wielded by Ansarien Ill'conter. This is not due to any proper relationship between the weapons, as seen with the Falling-Star Blades, but instead the history of their wielders. Much of this is due to the epic Dominion and Defiance, written by the famous bard Vendil Dath'venn.
Powers
Its enchantment is the stuff of legends for all who practice the craft. It has a striking enchantment like many other weapons, albeit an incredibly powerful one. It also has enchantments that make it lightweight and easy to wield. However its most deadly power is its ability to channel whatever element its wielder desires, making it very useful against a wide variety of enemies. It is also enchanted with the ability to be teleported to Eldain's hand at his command, it is not known if this applies to other wielders. Additionally, Eldain has explained that it can only be wielded by one with a "kind heart" so that it's power doesn't fall into the wrong hands.
