The Werewolf of the Forest in The True Dark Ages | World Anvil

The Werewolf of the Forest

In the forests to the east of the road running between Aachen & Eschbach, there is a cabin halfway between these settlements. The cabin is rundown but still useable. Used by the woodsmen that sometimes pass there as a base, they usually avoid there during the nights of the full moon.   This comes from a time that a bunch of woodsmen stayed there and were hunted down by a monster. They had nowhere to stay at the time and had heard that the cabin was available but was warned the only person who used it regularly was an old barbarian. The locals warned them that he was a violent man of Saxon origin that had a wolfpelt & belt constantly on his person, and had a penchant for viciously attacking others who he encountered around the cabin & surrounding woods.   The woodsmen thought they could take him on if they stuck together and presented a united front. They camped out in & around the cabin and used it regularly for the month they were there.   Only for that not it not to last.   During the start of the full moon at night, they could hear howling coming from around the cabin. Knowing that wolves still lived in the region they took little notice. A short time into the night the howling got closer and a few of the pack horses were swiftly killed violently. When the woodsmen checked, the horses were literally torn apart and swiftly too. Large bite marks and clawed tears were present as well as bites took out the horses flesh. bipedal & quadripedal footprints were around each.   The woodsmen decided to send out a couple of the men to get to Aachen to get more pack horses & a few militia as protection. A few hours later the remaining men went to work. Tidying up the best they could they went about collecting timber and maintaininmg the new growth trees they noticed someone had been living in the forest around them. Keeping an eye out and remembering the story of the barbarian, they split into groups to protect themselves and keep watch during the night.   That night, the first watch lost a man, and quick. Nobody seen or hear the killer strike, but htey left a bloody mess of a corpse. The poor man was ripped apart and quickly. On the next shift the men were more alert but still lost two of them.   The next day they buried the men and kept hoping the two they sent out arrived back with help.   Then the next night came. Nearly every man couldn't sleep that night and jumping at every little thing. They prowled around looking to find out if they were going to get attacked again.   Sadly they were. Two by two they were taken out and savagely so. Broken battered bodies lay everywhere as if some wild animal had attacked them. And in a way they were.   The two men that were sent out arrived before daybreak with 10 militia and a few pack horses. They found the place a sight of absolute carnage and it looked as if they had been hunted down & ripped apart. Looking round they found humanoid tracks, clawed and with slight hair embedded in some like that of a huge wolf.   They heard at that point howling that sounded inhuman. Looking at the direction of the cabin, they seen a creature standing in it's doorway. It was massive, humanoid in shape and had a distinct wolfen shape too. A belt & wolfpelt melded into the flesh of the creature were present in the now flickering sunrise.   They ran, both woodsmen and militia. They knew rightly it was the barbarian and they knew the totem animal of him was a wolf. Thundreing to the road, they never looked back.   Eventually they made it home to Aachen and said what they saw. Few believed them uotright, but the forest there and especially the cabin is now out of bounds. The barbarian is still there and as fate would have it, obe woodsman survived. He made his way to Eschbach, and is living there. Hie is elderly now and named himself Bjorn. Well respected therehe was originally from there before moving north. Once in a while he has to travel north to the cabin. His fate is now tied to the bbarbarian and he has continually tried to kill it.   As fate would have it, his new lord may be able to help but the less he knows the better at times. To do so would lead to Bjorn being unmasked as a werewolf too.
"Aye. It's true, there is a shapeshifter there. Don't stop there at all. Trsvel the whole night if you have to. There are things there that would torment you forever."   Bjorn of Eschbach's council.
