The Last Voyage of the Janetorous Rex

The legend of the Last Voyage of the Janetorus Rex has been floating around the northwest coast of Frankia for a number of years now, and now being told in places all along the coast of southern Britain. A tragic tale, mostly told by seafarers as a warning about not listening or respecting the sea & superstitions. It tells the story of two young lovers lost to the oceans of the world.   According to the legend, a young pirate captain called Jacque led a band of merry pirates on a ship he called Janetorous Rex across the seas from the North Atlantic as far as the Baltic Sea. They raided settlements & ships, even those of the Norse and the Wends, making manyy enemies all the while. Now Jacque, being a rather handsome lad and a quick wit had an eye for the ladies especially those he found in foriegn lands. He excused himself by saying that he didn't want to spoil the reputation of the Frankish ladies as to do so would only tarnish their reputations.   In doing so, he had an eye constantly on the Celtic lasses of Hibernia and western Britain. Most of these he described as almost as beautiful as the Frankish ladies, and almost as ferociously outgoing & tempermental as the Norse women. Never one to sit still for long he almost had a woman in all the ports in these coutries he visited, moving on quickly when one bored him. This though was to change.   Arriving at the small harbour town in Hibernia's south coast called Cork, he and his men started getting some shore leave. They needed to restock on supplies and were trying to sell off a portion of their illgotten goods. While doing so, Jacque approached the local chieftain, a man called Niall, who had loose connections with the members of the Janetorous Rex, to barter some goods. Jacque was also trying to hire a few Niall's warriors so he could carry out a raid on a couple of Cornish coastal villages to get the precious ores that were shipped out of them.   When in with Naill, Jacque soon encountered Naimh. A young woman of exceptional beauty, coppery red hair, and a charm about her Jacque had never encountered anyone quite like her before. Naill knew the reputation of Jacque and warned him to stay away from Naimh. He told Jacque out straight that Naimh was his daughter and touched by the Fey through her mother's side claiming that the girl always attracted the Aos Si for good or ill. If Jacque tried anything he would surely attract them to him and their attentions may not be what he wanted.   Jacque could not stop thinking about Naimh the whole of the next day. So much so, his crewmen warned him off the idea of approaching her. A woman & a redhead, two things they believed should never be on a ship of any kind, bringing only bad luck and outright diseaster.   Sadly he didn't listen. Slipping into Naimh's chambers that night, Jacque seduced Naimh and by morning had slipped out with him to the Janetorous Rex. Not telling the crew, Jacque had them hastily pull out of dock before the town knew what had happened, they made for the open water of the Irish Sea.   What followed next was a series of hopelessness for everyone on board. They attacked a couple of Welsh villages hoping to get a few slaves and some gold. Somehow they were beaten back by superior numbers. A couple of the crew even got killed before they realised what had happened. Ploughing south, they attacked Douglas, where the Manx beat them back at sea with the help of a Hibernian floitilla that had pulled in to rest after a storm.   Deciding to try their luck with the Cornish, they struck a few ships travelling from southern Cornwall to Brittany. They were again beaten back losing roughly half their men. When they fled they heard the call of a Druid ringing out over the sea saying they were sursed as soon as they set sail. All the Aos Si knew what Jacque had done and had started spreading word along the Feywild's secret pathways.   The crew feeling hopeless, stormed Jacque's captain's room finding Naimh there. She was sick from some unknown disease, one that had started shortly after they had left port. The crew were aghast, all believing the superstitions of women & redheads being at sea. Jacque told them to either get back to work or he would get rid of them all getting a better bunch of cutthoats by his side.   The crew immediately set sail grumbling that they were doomed. This could not be more true. Rounding the north west tip of Brittany, they ran straight into a storm like they had never encountered before. Rising from the depth came a Sea Serpent of extreme size that proceeded to tear the ship apart. Pretty much all the remaining crew died in the first pass, and only when it began to sink did Jacque & Naimh try to escape. For them sadly, they realised their way was blocked and though the sea serpent & storm were now passing, they were on a courtse now to hit a rocky outcrop. Tearing into it they were both killed.   Unknown to them was another druid, one standing looking down on the now destroyed ship and the bodies being washed to shore. The druid whispered to an owl that accompanied him, "The Aos Si are now satisfied. The hopeless romance with one of their own and a lowly mortal like that will always fail."    The Aos Si had their own secretive plans involving Naimh, and with Jacque ruining it, had passed the information between themselves & the druids. In every case, there wasa druid making sure that the right people, weather events, and even the sea serpent, was present to reclaim Naimh's soul to put in a newborn body that could fulfil their plans.   As for Jacque.... he is now the sole ghostly inhabitant of an equally ghost version of the Janetorous Rex plying the waters around northern Brittany, Cornwall, Wales & the Isle of Mann hopelessly looking for his beloved Naimh for eternity.
"Sure I've heard the tale. Most who travel the waters around these parts have. A warning to stick to the rules of the sea and the spirits. Anger them, and you are truly a lost cause. No amount of hope will save you then."   An unnamed sailor speaking in a public house in Portsmouth southern Britain.
