Temple of the Slug

Buried deep in the north of the Italian Peninsula at the base of the Alps is an overgrown partially ruined temple & a ruined village. Carved out of stone blocks and highly detailed, the temple was an old church now abandoned for over 400 years. Since htat time it ha been repurposed.   Around the time the village had the church built, they had broke up an ancient temple to a Star God. Exactly what the god was called has been lost to time, but this did not go down well. Over the next few months the amount of slugs increased in the area, slithering out of every dark nook & cranny, and damaging foodstiffs, damaging crops and even somehow poisoning livestock.   No matter what the villagers done they couldn't get rid of the slugs. They eventually got to the point they turned to the authorities who in turn couldn't do much except try to use salt & magic to control the numbers. Again this didn't work. Eventually they turned to the church and found that this seemed to drive the slugs into a more aggressive stage.   When the church got involved, the slugs started to kill off livestock & crops, eating them, slithering back into dark wet areas afterwards. Eventually this got far far worse.   Some of the locals got attacked, and few killed over the course of Harvest & Autumn, with a spike just before Winter. When the locals were in church, the slug swarm had managed to work it's way up onto the church roof, and started to work it's way through the parts holding the church roof in place. This caused the roof to collapse, at least in places, and many were injured or killed outright by the falling masonary. Any that survived were covered in swarms of slugs that attacked them and started to feed on their warm tissues.   The scene turned into a bloody mess. Many of the villagers were killed and any that were left was traumatised & severely injured. Unfortunately, the Winter itself that year was savage. Freezing weather came off the Alps finishing off those that remained, and killing off massive swathes of the slugs.   When authorities returned in spring they found what was left, and salted where they could. The runoff of melting ice & snow from the Alps removed a good part of this salt and sporadic outbreaks of large slug numbers skyrocked on & off for a few years. The combination of all this and the reputation of the slugs meant the village & church was abandoned, and edicts were put into place to prevent anyone living or using the region for the foreseeable future.   Since then. a few have stayed over in the near vanished village, and report that the slugs are still active every once in a while. The church is the centre point for any outbreaks and both them & their eggs are in abundance in this structure. Many animals have took to feeding on the slugs, especially birds with many having scars on their beaks & faces, and legs from the slugs feeding mouths.   Every once in a while, those that stay any length of time are found pretty much ate to the bone covered in slime and the faint sound of multiple slithering bodies on stone are heard. This has led to the authorites maintaining the no fo zone all these centuries later.
"Heard of that once. A mass outbreak of vermin at the southern edge of the Alps 3 maybe 4 centuries ago? Whole village and a half-decent church there destroyed. Story goes the church was built over an ancient Star God temple, and the vermin were it's 'children' of sorts. No-one still allowed to go into the area in case there's still a chance of attack from the vermin."   A priest talking to Father Tossil.
