Sneaking into the Church Plot in The True Dark Ages | World Anvil

Sneaking into the Church

Willhelm tries to steal a certain demon sword, from below the church in Eschbach.

Plot points/Scenes

Willhelm gets the chance to steal the demon sword. With Grimmaz preparing for the arrival of Charlemagne, it would be the time to strike.   At the night before, he has the chance of finding the entrance to the vault. It sits just behind the altar in the church and has a Glyph of Warding placed on it causing electricity damage from Explosive Runes. It also awakens the guardians below. It is activated by any creature opening it except for a member of the Roman Catholic priesthood. When opened there's a set of a wooden steps going down into a stone chamber. Inside there is a high risk of being attacked by a Swarm of Rats and 25% chance of being the disease - The Plague of Justinian (the Black Death), and eventually running in to the main protector of the chamber, a repentant Radiant Idol.   The latter cannot be avoided, and if forced to will fight.   In the chamber is a small collection of proscribed texts and banned books, along with a couple of cursed dolls, a voodoo cult mask from Africa, a strange cube puzzle, and the sword placed on it's own stone table wrapped in the protective cloth. If it is opened the same Glyph of Warding will be activated as above. All Willhelm needs to do is get the sword out at this point and hide it.   If caught he will be held in the vault by the local clerics & monks, and handed over to Charlemagne for prosecution. This may have repercussions for both him & Grimmaz where one or both will have to do some type of penance or be thrown out of the Frankish Empire and treated as outlaws along with Willhelm's family. They would likely get stripped of the township of Eschbach too, and may be handed over to the nearest Saxon city during a prisoner swap.   If successful, Willhelm will end up being banned from using church resources and protection permanently. This is likely to cause any member of the church and their allies treating him as akin to an outlaw along with his family. The only way for redemption is the handing over of the sword and any other dangerous items he encounters as well as doing penance of some kind.   If retrieved, the daemon is really a Keeper of Secrets called by many names and changing them regularly. They will introduce their name as Lickspittle the Elven-kin. It will try to get Willhelm to drop the Star Spawn as his patron and take up with them. At the same time Willhelm will feel the grip of the Star Spawn slipping away with the risk of losing his Warlock powers.
