Klaus the Hunted Plot in The True Dark Ages | World Anvil

Klaus the Hunted

Fllec gets a new target. Klaus, the handyman of Countess Gabrielle de Rais is to become his next target. Looks like he has extended his reach a bit too much and made a few enemies.

Plot points/Scenes

Fleec is prowling the usual hangouts of Eschbach and he overhears a few complaining about the spymaster & henchman of the Countess Gabrielle de Rais, a man only known as Klaus. Known to be a devious enough man, but with a temper, he is foud regularly going round Orleans enforcing the de Rais will, and causing trouble farther away with his spies. In the past few months he had sent a spy to Eschbach that defected to Greimmaz's side and they are wary he may try something.   In this instance Fleec also overhears that if successful in removing Klaus, a character the name of Eleia would love to know that the threat is over. Maybe Klaus' head would be the perfect 'gift' left on her doorstep?   To find Klaus, Fleec needs to travel to Orleans in the west. He'll have to avoid attracting attention to himself in general as with the de Rais having a stranglehold in the region, it is likely Klaus will have the odd spy or equivalent spread throughout the populace.    At the gate to Orleans he'll find that he will have to enter through the sewers or bribe the guards if they are suspicious of him. Also, he might be able to either intimidate, persuade or deceive the guards to get in.   Asking around or spying on the de Rais property Fleec can quickly work out who Klaus is. He's a burly man starting to bald, with a scar down the left side of the face (it runs from his hairline down over his eye onto his cheek). He is also a member of the local cavalry and trained as such.   Klaus regularly goes to the seedier part of town to carouse, gathe information, hire prostitutes and get drunk. He would also spread rumours in favour of the de Rais & the le Marchands blackening the names of the other noble families. This may be used to Fleec's advantage especially since Klaus is quick to act with his fists at times, and many of the locals there don't trust him. The prostitutes & the local Thieves of Frankia hate him as he is very rough with the girls. They are willing to supply information or help out for free if Klaus is removed.   Fleec will notice that there is regularly to lesser nobles with him at times and both seem to be mid to late teens and he is obviously teaching them elements of his trades as spymaster & cavalry officer. How Fleec handles this is up to him.   Klaus will likely be looking for female company and / or information about a delivery he recently sent to Eschbach concerning Eleia. It seems that he has sent 30 silver to her and the horn of a Tiefling as a well as a warning for turning against him.   This may work to Fleec's advantage to set Klaus up. Get him alone in a room expecting a prostitute and maybe food & drink. Possibly attack him or poison him and the job is done.   Fleec will discover on Klaus' body a necklace. Made of silver it has Elvish script on it, and forces the wearer to tell the truth at al times. This can always be pocketed, along with a personal signet ring, but no family name is attached. It seems linked to the rank of spymaster in the de Rais family
