Lewis wanted to go out to Boulder Island with his friends who had already turned fifteen, but it was the last tram to go out there for the day, and they only let boys who had a Forearm tattoo to board the tram to the island. Lewis’s tattoo wouldn’t appear for several hours, so he had to watch from Poseidon Beach on the mainland.

As he stood there, waiting for the singing and the lantern release, his forearm felt as if it was on fire and there the tattoo appeared. A ginger Private First Class Marine with a Tantalusian dialect saw the tattoo, brought Lewis to the Catamites’ section of the beach, west of the pier, where the marine made sure that Lewis got a Scanner Medallion, put their clothes in lockers as clothing is not allowed on that part of the beach, and then the marine rode Lewis for hours.
