Director

Dangit Maya! You know very well it takes long hours and years of dedication to reach Director. My bisabuelo was a Director, and if my abuelo had not failed so miserably I would have started as a Manager, instead of a mere Service Representative. I worked my way up to Senior Manager in only 15 years, and now, with Director in sight, now you complain?
Carlos, you know I support you. I have always supported you, but Carlito needs a father now, he is in trouble because he lashes out without guidance. He needs you here, not at work. I know Director is close, and I too dream of a retirement among the Domes of Luna, but can you not take a sabbatical, or reduce your extra duties for a few years, just until our son is grown?
Aye, Maya. I know our son struggles. I could, if I had not just accepted that special project for the Executive Director. This is visibility with an Executive. I cannot step back now. Perhaps in a few months, but not now. Can your father help? I know Carlito respects him, perhaps more even than he respects me.
The woman sighed, and thought for a bit.
Si, desposado, my father can help, and he has. Our son needs his father, though. I wish this special project had never come up, but I know what it means to step away from an Executive project. I will talk with my father, but whatever you can do to spend a little more time with Carlito will make a huge difference now, far more than in six months or a year.
Desposada, I understand. There is so much I must do at work, but I will try harder to find some time at home.

Director. One of the most sought-after and longed-for goals of most Employees. While the titles of Senior Director, Vice President, or any of the Executive ranks were mostly reserved for the scions of the existing Executives, Director was attainable by anyone with hard work and a lifetime of total devotion to The Corporation. Few achieved this honor, as only one Employee in five thousand was a Director, but those who did were guaranteed a retirement Condominium among the Domes of Luna, and their grandchildren, or children if still young, could attend the Luna campus of Pleiades University, the most prestigious institute of higher learning in the Solar System. Graduates of Luna campus were practically guaranteed to start their careers as at least Junior Manager, and most began as Managers or even Senior Managers. Achieving the rank of Director was, therefore, a generational accomplishment that paid dividends for two generations. That extra jump start would, likewise, improve the chances of descendants also achieving the coveted Director rank, and the contacts available only to residents of Luna could, by the second generation, even offer the slim hope of one of those descendants rising to the Executive ranks, changing the fortunes of the entire family for many generations thereafter.
