The Patchwork Dream
After the Zira Imperium successfully conquers a people, the brutal process of assimilation begins. The conquered are assigned to the Subrim, the lowest caste in Imperium society and stripped of any possessions or holdings. Any statues or other symbols of the conquered society are swiftly and efficiently destroyed as well as many of the books and other records. The few books that are not destroyed are instead taken to the private archives in Parakis, to be hidden in the vaults for only a select few of the Imperium's archivists to peruse. Any teaching of history is forbidden and brutally punished.
But identity and culture is not so easily extinguished, and across the Imperium many have taken it upon themselves to preserve this knowledge and to fight back against their oppressors. These people form the Patchwork Dream, a loose network of rebels who keep the history alive. They operate as a loosely organised network of cells, each with only limited knowledge of each other who pass along books and intelligence information. A typical operative might spend one night teaching others of their true history or copying a book to pass along to another cell then spend the next night sneaking around to commit acts of sabotage.
