Yerendi
Often recognised for their unique mottled skin, the Yerendi originated from what is now Akavel. Two hundred years ago, that site was home to the nation of Yerend. Yerend was just beginning to establish itself, having developed a productive and effective form of agriculture that was able to support their burgeoning society when their lands were invaded and annexed by the Zira Imperium.
When the annexation happened, those who could fled south, taking what they could to eventually found new settlements at Kerevin's Drop and Wormriver Bend. Those who could not flee were assimilated into Imperium society. What little they remember of their original history is passed down to each other in hushed whispers, and the official history of the imperium largely erases what took place.
The Imperium tends to treat all conquered peoples as a lower caste, and their attitude to the "motley ones" is no different. They are often assigned the most unpleasant jobs, which often are also either dirty or dangerous, they have few opportunities to rise within Imperium Society. Whilst they are still the majority of the population within Akavel, they are deliberately kept busy and monitored to avoid them being able to organise themselves in any effective manner.
Outside of Akavel, the trauma of the annexation is more clearly remembered. In Kerevin's Drop, it has informed their choice of home; they have chosen the most defensible place they can. While Wormriver Bend has no similar defensive advantages, theirs is an insular community with a strong distrust of outsiders and a focus on self reliance.
