Legend of Laesar

Long ago in ages past,
A man begat a mighty quest
To prove Aeganes ever strong
And found a city ever long.   Laesar his name ringing true
Set off amongst the morning dew
To the mountains high above
He sought a home for his love.   Love of combat, but not war
That not what his strength was for
In the peaks all white with snow
He thought this was where to go.   But with a shriek, it appeared
Beast of teeth and hoary beard
Fought it Laesar did by hand
And learned this was not the land.   How could combat rule the day
if by beasts it was waylaid?
So he left the snow and ice,
In search of somewhere more nice.   To the south he trekked so far
And heard above Cegae's roar
Here was the land of molten earth
The place of the Fire God's birth.   Laesar called out with great pride
Challenging the god inside
Declared the god would be sent
To accomplish his intent.   Cegae gave his seat a shake
And the earth itself did break
Ash blocked out Maenscul's great light
From that place Laesar took flight   For while he feared no being
He could not deny seeing
The impossible strength there
When earthen thunder split air.   To the north he went again
To the bones of ancient ken
And declared this place the home
Of Aeganes mighty throne.   But ill in bed he soon was,
City home of Vasculas
Who did not take with kind heart
Boastful threats from an upstart.   Laesar once more was away
This was clearly not the day
He had found Aeganes rest
But the place would be the best   South once more the man was blown
For the Plains he went to roam
Surely in this great wide place
He could find a rightful place.   For his deity loved so dear
Deserved a place bright and clear
Room for all who came to spar
From nearby and from so far.   But he was soon set upon
By Lionsnakes with venom
Acid spitting razor maws
Swiping with their mighty claws.   Laesar fought with back to wall,
and managed to beat them all
And then his eyes saw clearly
The land he sought so dearly.   For all fight fiercest when pressed,
And the site with combat dressed
Proved it was Aeganes home
This place where he won alone.   Great arena he did build,
Upon this site where he'd killed
No more a site for lost blood
But noble duels would be stood.   Thus concludes Laesar's great quest,
Fouding Aeganes great rest
Gnomesaroy would be known
Long beyond time of his own.

Summary

The story of Laesar, a dedicant of the demon Deity of Combat, Aeganes, recounting his quest to found a city in their honor.

Historical Basis

While it certainly true the city of Gnomesaroy was founded by a king named Maesar and highly likely he traveled in search of the location, it is a matter of debate whether every event occurred as recorded. Laesar himself appears to be the only witness to most of the events, and boasting is a time-honored tradition when telling tales of one's trials and triumphs.    Though some claim the Traveler God Porscil walked with Laesar for some of his trip, the god is also known to exaggerate to tell a more interesting story when it suits him.    Later, the epic was inscribed around the stone walls of the Grand Arena of Gnomesaroy - but this was done long after Laesar's death, in a new Age - copied down from oral tradition which also likely changed and embellished, as is the nature of such stories.

Spread

The Legend of Laesar is well known across the entirety of the Demon Realm.

In Art

The Legend of Laesar is a common subject to be performed as a play, for being both well-known and full of action and excitement. There is also a common children's song about the legend, which goes:
The mountains are too cold,
Gavonar much too hot!
The bones are much too old,
Where is the perfect spot?   The plains are far too wide,
The rivers much too deep,
But where the beasts they hide,
This spot we will keep!
