Ghost Monarch Rank/Title in The Thirteen Realms | World Anvil

Ghost Monarch

Most souls upon death are transferred to the Ghost Realm by a deity or their messengers - though some may be missed or refuse to be moved. Without the protection of the plentiful celestial energy in the Ghost Realm, however, these souls grow brittle and fragment - if they do not fray into ether entirely.    Those that arrive in the Ghost Realm often continue to exist for some time after their deaths - usually in relation to the ties they have remaining in the mortal realms. Friends, family, regrets - any of these can cause a soul to persist. But as these ties wane, most souls fade beack into the ether they were born form to begin the spiritual cycle again.    But there are those ghosts with ties so strong that they persist in petuity - once a ghost persists for ten thousand years, their soul is no longer at risk of fading. While not true rulers, the portion of the Ghost Realm they inhabit does tend to change form to suit the ancient spectre - these portions came to be known as castles regardless of their form, and their masters Monarchs.

Requirements

Persist as a ghost for ten thousand years.

Benefits

The primary benefit, other than assured existence, of becoming a Ghost Monarch is that said monarchs do recieve an invitation to the Hundred Years Ball. They may, if they choose, wish to return themselves to life - but, as doing so will weaken their souls, upon their second death a monarch's spirit will immediately dissipate rather than be returned to the Ghost Realm.
