The Lantern Maker

Darkness overtakes the Thicket. Nothing can be seen but the empty void that is night. Like how the desktop of a computer suddenly becomes unseeable once it is powered off. Then, far in the distance there is light, so faint you wonder if it is really there. Then another farther away. Soon there are little pinpricks of light popping up and guiding you somewhere. Guiding you back to your home where you find a lantern set on the table made of the most brilliant colored glass. It spreads warm yellows, cool blues, and dreamy purples on your walls.   That is the work of the Lantern Maker   He is an old man who makes the most beautiful and extravagant lanterns ever seen by any living thing. He goes out at night with his lanterns and lights a warm flame inside. It is said that if you follow the path of lanterns it will lead you back where you belong.   Some claim to have seen him once or twice. Some claim they have met the old man, but none can prove a conversation with the Lantern Maker save one of his lanterns. It is unknown where he dwells but some say he has not a dwelling place but lives and makes in the moment, wherever that may be.   So, traveler of the Thicket, if you ever be lost, look for the light of the lanterns.

...yet another curious character... I'd love to have a lantern made by him. They sound so beautiful! <3

This sounds very cool! It makes me wonder if the Lantern Maker is an individual, or actually a genius loci; protective spirit of the Thicket. Either way, wonderfully evocative.

Thats wonderful!! I did think of that when I created him. Most of my characters and lore find roots in older folklore weather I want them to or not.

There are about four, maybe five, original stories in the world. The rest are ideas taken from the originals and innovated into fresh 'new' stories. Keep going with it. The Will O' the Wisps are a great basis for the tale.
