Tanit System Security and Defence Service

The window shattered in a burst of accelerator fire, and the rest in the room blew out when the follow up concussion grenade detonated. Green helmeted troops were swarming through the astro-complex, which had until now been an outpost of the Carmichael Family, a criminal syndicate specializing in piracy and kidnapping. Frank's ears were ringing from the blast and he barely took cover before shots impaced the wall behind where he'd been standing. Someone had let the location slip while celebrating a recent job, and the SDS were faster than they'd anticipated. Jimmy and Jacklyn Peabody, the twins, were busy applying plasma torches to the servers while the rest of the family fought it out. The SDF fire slackened and a voice came over the PA system, "This is Sub-Commander Singh of the 3rd Strike Group, all remaining personnel on this station wil throw down their weapons and surrender. We have impounded your ships, blocked the escape pods, and now control the life support systems. Exit your positions slowly, and prepare to be processed." They all knew it was over now. Even the twins put down their plasma torches. Frank slid his pistol out across the glass and broken furniture strewn floor, and emerged with his hands up. The faceless gaze of the combat armoured SDS troops was as unnerving as ever. "We surrender!" he shouted, and heard his own voice echo across the PA system. One of the trooper must have a mic somewhere he thought as he was roughly searched and cuffed. He prayed he'd never find out who it was who'd blabbed. Leaving, he saw Security & Enforcement personnel picking through equipment and taking notes. With a deep feeling of unease, he realized this was much bigger than the usual anti-pirate operation.
The Tanit System League toes a careful line in the system, needing to have enough teeth and ability to maintian respect, but not so much that the less cooperative nations might band together to try to fight them. So on paper, and in their official releases, they highlight the efforts of their famous "red helmets", the famous quick reaction force and security unit that protects their offices. But that's only the tip of the iceberg when it comes to the forces available to the TSL. That's where the umbrella organation of the Tanit System Security and Defense Service comes in. Citing security concerns increasing in the post-reconnection era, the TSl has quietly built up a respectable but non-expeditionary collection of civilian and para-military units capable of a lot more than what most think the TSL is capable of. The governments of the nations and city-states of Tanit are aware of this shift, and are chaffing badly under it because it's not unreasonable and they haven't been able to articulate why it's bad. After all, the TSL can point directly back at the Great Stellar War's fallout and the known fact that Sol has a strong military and many potential interests in the Tanit system, then follow that up with the fact that few nations or city-states have been willing to step up.   Very reasonably, the growing power of the TSL and their security role has some political elites sweating, as it's an open secret that there's factions in the organization that want to see it become a true system government. However, their increased efficacy against pirates and the general improvements to system security has been lauded by the public.

Structure

The Tanit System Security and Defence Service is divided into several services with very different mandates.

The Tanit System Defence Force

The TSDF is the evolution of the older and more established TSL "Red Helmet" Tactical Corps and the Red Wing Aerospace forces. However, in order to avoid military categorization, they are officially a paramilitary service. Still in its foundational and establishment phases, the TSDF is currently at approximately 54% strength, with a planned strength of 118047. In keeping with its "paramilitary" nature, it has a modified organizational structure and rank hierarchy. The TSDF are known to many as the "Green Helmets", after their distinctive light green helmets and identifier markings on their uniforms.  Organization:   These are broad guidelines that can vary depending on the unit, its role and capabilities, and whether it has suffered casualties, has members on leave, or is understrength.
  • Team: 4 members, the smallest organizational and usable element.
  • Squad: 12 members, the smallest unit typically assigned to any task.
  • Group: 36 members, the smallest unit assigned individual objectives in an operation.
  • Strike Group: 3 to 5 Groups, the smallest unit deployed to high risk operations.
  • Detachment: 3 to 5 Strike Groups, typically assigned to operational areas or subsectors.
  • Division: 3 to 5 Detachments, typically assigned to a large area or sector.
Ranks:   As a paramilitary unit, ranks are heirarchical and there are commissioned and non-commissioned members.   Non-Commissioned Ranks (from lowest to highest)
  • Defender 3rd Class
  • Defender 2nd Class (Team leader)
  • Defender 1st Class (Squad leader)
  • Adjutant 2nd Class
  • Adjutant 1st Class
Commissioned Ranks (from lowest to highest)
  • Junior Leader (Group leader)
  • Leader (Group leader)
  • Senior Leader (Strike Group leader)
  • Sub-Commander (Strike Group leader or Detachment second in command)
  • Commander (Detachment leader)
  • Deputy Division Commander (Division second in command)
  • Division Commander (Division leader)
  • Deputy Commandant (second in command of the TSDF)
  • Commandant (commands the whole TSDF)

Formations

The TSDF is, at the moment, the analogue of a "unified service", in that it has no specific branches. Each Division is a self contained formation that includes the equivalent of space navy, aerospace, marine, and commando elements. The command Division, based on Barcino, includes intelligence, strategic command, and moon defence units. The TSDF has stood up 3 Divisions so far, the 1st, 3rd, and 8th, in addition to the Barcino Division. the shipyards are as busy as the training bases and they scramble to get their units in order before anything serious happens.   Notable units include:
  • 3rd Strike Group, commanded by Sub-Commander Ujjal Singh. Noted for their close quarters combat capabilities and anti-piracy operations, they are part of the 8th Division.
  • 1st Detachment, commanded by Commander Alice Leung. Their surveillance and reconaissance capabilities are respected system wide, and they excel in asteroid field maneuvers.

Tanit System Relief Corps

The TSRC has one prupose, and that's humanitarian aid. Its ships and personnel are loosely organized on the same pattern as the TSDF, but their goals are wholely different. Deepspace search and rescue, medical aid, and responding to crises are their specialties, and they're the only organization in system that's rated as "expeditionary". Elements have already assisted other systems, and they're a crucial part of the sof tpower projection plan of the TSL. TRSC members are well trained and highly motivated, and they have specialists who can operate in all known climates and conditions a terran can possibly survive in. Their distinctive headwear is white, with specialist markings being prominent on them and their uniforms (medical, engineer, rescue, communications, etc...). When deployed to areas where there may be a risk posed by combatants or other dangers, they're escorted and supported by TSDF members. The TSRC currently has three deployable elements that are detachment sized, and their policy is that two fleets must remain in the Tanit system at all times to support their home system.

Tanit System Civil Security and Investigation Service

Early in the process of developing the TSSDS, the TSL recognized the need for an official law enforcement arm, and after a lot of wranging and scope definition, the Tanit System Civil Security and Investigation Service was born. The TSCSIS has a broad mandate that includes the enforcement of trade, environmental, commercial, and civil law in the Tanit System. They have system wide jurisdiction to enforce the law, and have a difficult relationship with local authorities. In essence, when they show up, it's either really bad criminally, or it's bad criminally and the local law enforcement is corrupt. The one place they don't butt heads with anyone is with criminal transport and in deepspace law enforcement. They use their own unique rank structure, and maintain Departments that specialize in specific criminal activities (commercial, piracy, etc...). Th distincitve headware of the TSCSIS is blue with black and white dicing, their uniforms have the same dicing in a reflective material on them.   Ranks (from lowest to highest)
  • Guardian 3rd Class
  • Guardian 2nd Class
  • Guardian 1st Class
  • Sub-Inspector
  • Inspector
  • Sub-Commander
  • Commander
  • Sub-Commissioner
  • Commissioner

Culture

The TSSDS has a culture of professionalism that's struggling under the burden to perferm to spec without being completely ready. Members are drawn from all walks of life and all places in Tanit, and they're then rigourously trained to perform their tasks. However, it's a largely souless operation at this time. Newly stood up, and with a new mandate combined with new hierarchies and a mix of out of retirement and poached form other services leadership has left the organizaiton stuggling as a body to define itself. A notable exception being the TSRC, who have quickly developed their own culture and espirit de corps under hard, real world operational experience. The rest of the TSSDS lacks a lot of that, and until they do, they tend to be very inside the box thinkers who follow the proscribed plan and only deviate under duress.

Public Agenda

Security and safety for the peoples of Tanit! Public Relations is working overtime to sell the TSSDS to the public as a natural progression of the TSL's older practices, bringing order and safety to places where it was lacking and supporting local authorities and governments in times of trouble.

Assets

As a complete body, the TSSDS is currently the largest single space fleet in the system, and when they reach full strength, they will have over 3x the amount of vessels as all other powers combined. They opperate everythign from cutter to cruiser class vessels, and are in the process of constructing two carrier fleets. There are approximately 128k personnel in total across all services, and the numbers are continuing to grow. Ground forces are broadly light and medium weight, relying on orbital support ot make up for their lack fo heavy assets. TSSDS bases and facilites vary greatly, and can be found everywhere in the system. Their main base of operations is on Barcino, where the TSL is based as well.

History

The process of standing up the TSSDS was decades in the making. The major hurdles were both diplomatic and financial. On the former, the TSL had to convince governemnts across the system to allow them to have jurisdiciton, wha tthat jurisdiction covered, and how they would interoperate. In the matter of the latter, there's nothing cheap about the TSSDS. Ships, personnel, equipment, infrastructure, vehicles, arms... the list went on and on, and no one wanted to shell out more money for a system wide military for a organization that has aspirations of becoming the system government. What changed everythign was the Reconnection. The hyperspace gate flaring to life and connecting Tanit to the rest of Terran space meant that they were no longer an isolated system. And no one had forgotten the effects of the Great Stellar War. So with grudging acceptance and assurances that it wa sparamilitary and not "military", the TSL secured a budget from its members. In the years since, the TSSDS has grown rapidly and purposesly put itself in the limelight with dealing with out system groups.   Owing to the Reconnection and the increased trade that's brought, in the last few years the TSSDS has found itself involved heavily in counter-piracy, counter-terrorism, and in anti-smuggling operations.
