MacNamara Breeding Farm

The MacNamara Breeding Farm raises animals often favored by those with The Talent: horses, hippogriffs, unicorns, and now Maine Coon cats. They also raise chickens, pigs, cows, and sheep as food.   Most of the farm consists of pasture, where the animals graze. The fields specifically for the unicorns are filled with flowers, as unicorns prefer flowering plants to grass. There are also greenhouses where some of the clan experiment with breeding plants for animal feed. They have had some success creating a hardy perennial hibiscus by crossing it with a climbing rose variety and an edible lily-of-the-valley by crossing it with woodland violets. (These lilies-of-the-woods are a pale blue, instead of the usual white.)   Deer roam the woods on the borders of the farm, mingling with the unicorns and occasionally producing strange hybrids. The MacNamaras have been attempting to capture, study, and breed the "deericorns" (as the children nicknamed them), but have not yet succeeded at breeding or raising one in captivity.

Geography

The MacNamara Breeding Farm is located on 500 acres of land in Western Kentucky. The climate is warmish, but temperate; there are distinct seasons. The farm consists mainly of pasture lands, but thick woods surround the entire farm. There are several roads in and out, and these have reasonably easy access to the mundane interstate highways, for the better transportation of stock and for the commuting ease of those clan members who work elsewhere.   Every clan member, their spouses and children, and farm employees are entitled to live there. A large central stone house for the clan chieftain, called simply the Big House, also serves as the main dining hall. There are barracks for the hired hands. Family members have their own cottages. If a family member elects to live off the farm, they may rent their cottage to a senior hand with family.   The MacNamaras salvaged one building from the homestead in Ireland: an ancient stone oratory, built for the clan's first Seer. It was not destroyed in the attack (see below), and was moved from Ireland to Kentucky stone by stone.   Other buildings includes several barns, a veterinary hospital, a cattery, and a church.   The farm is enclosed in an advanced magical security system. All the clan members are Talented and will defend the farm to the best of their abilities. There are also underground bunkers to hide the family and the stock. The woods also serve as a boundary and a way of hiding the magical animals which live on the farm.

History

The MacNamaras, as their name might indicate, originally hailed from Ireland. The family has had a strong tendency towards The Talent for more than fifteen hundred years. They first established a breeding farm in the time of Brian Boru. Originally, the farm bred warhorses and hippogriffs. Later, they added unicorns. In the 1990s, they began to breed Maine Coon cats as well.   The breeding farm was a success, even under medieval and early modern English rule, and survived the Troubles in the 20th century unscathed. However, in 1996, Magio-Supremacists attacked the farm in order to kidnap a Seer in the clan. The attempt resulted in the murder of the Seer, then, in retaliation for her lack of cooperation, the magio-supremacists destroyed the farm and killed much of the stock.   The clan had been so prosperous over the years that many family members immigrated to Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and the United States to expand operations. The remaining Irish members sold their land in Ireland to a rapacious developer for an immense amount of money and joined their relatives in the United States. Since the MacNamaras in New York State were already established and well-staffed, the Irish branch simply replenished their stock of unicorns, hippogriffs, and horses, and moved south to Kentucky to establish another profitable farm.  The farm in Kentucky and the farm in New York State frequently breed their animals to widen the gene pools of the stock.
