Phlegethosian sand

Phlegethosian sand is the name of the fine obsidian sand acquired from Phlegethos, the fourth layer of the Nine Hells.

History

Significance

Because Hell's very nature spoils food and water, it is extremley difficult to find adequate ways to cool down metal, something very much needed due to the large amount of infernal warmachines and other devices the Blood Legions make use of in the neverending Blood War. Water from the River Styx contains its own magical properties that make it not suitable for routine metal cooling, and most sources of water are either limited in nature or cannot be transported.
Phlegethosian sand is the most common form of cooling throughout the Nine Hells, especially in Avernus. Most blacksmiths and other builders cool off their newly forged equipment in the sand, and some more complex machines, such as the Dream Machine of Fort Knucklebones, also make use of the sand for internal cooling.
