Mariners

The Mariners are the local militia of Saltmarsh, predominately made up of the town's fishermen.
The current joint leaders of the Mariners are Tom and his husband Will Stoutly.

Structure

The Mariners are generally self-regulating and promote from within, though the Saltmarsh Town Council does have the ability to order the levies to raise and can order the Mariners' leaders to step down if they are doing an inadequate job.
There are a few members of the Mariners who are paid by the town council to keep weapons, training, and other materials up-to-date, but the vast majority of the voluntary force works other jobs when not on duty.

History

Since Saltmarsh's founding, the Mariners have proctected Saltmarsh and served as a police force for the town.
In the early 1490s, Saltmarsh was harrassed repeatedly by the Sea Princes, a group of pirates who roamed the seas unchecked during the Great Dragon War. There were a few raids in and around Saltmarsh during this time that the Mariners were unable to repel.
In 1493, the Neverwinter Guard established a garrison in Saltmarsh to drive off the Sea Princes for good and in doing so have generally supplanted the Mariners as the de facto police and defense force of Saltmarsh, much to the chagrin of many Mariners and Traditionalists. However, the Mariners are still active and notably fought alongside the Neverwinter Guard during the 1496 Battle of the Spire.
