Pick-up Game 41: Rattlesnake
General Summary
This game took place after the events of Pick-up Game 40: Mass Seduction and was played on November 20th, 2022. Joining as players were:
The party entered the theater and found that it was a pale imitation of a real theater: the textures of the surfaces seemed fake didn't hold up to inspection. Moving through the lobby, they entered the main theater and saw that the male of the couple was being eaten by a strange creature that consisted primarily of jaws and tentacles. The man's wife seemed oblivious to what was happening and told the party that her husband was getting a backstage tour, even though her partner was being ripped apart in front of the party's eyes.
The party leapt into action and escorted the older woman from the theater. They rallied Constable Pep, who was party of the enchanted crowd, to evacuate the citizens and returned to the interior of the theater in time to see an ogre dragging the corpse of the consumed man outside. This ogre had an eyestalk bursting through the bridge of its nose. The strange tentacled creature was briefly seen and the party went on the attack.
During the fight against the strange tentacled creature, the landscape shifted a couple of times. After it first grabbed Zabbas and tried consuming him, the surrounding area shifted to the appearance of a forest running along a glacial creek, an environment favored by Gabilan. The ogre with the strange eyestalk reentered the snowy terrain but was quickly defeated by the team.
The strange tentacled monster disappeared and reappeared a few times, attacking members of the party when they weren't prepared for it. Zabbas summoned a lightning storm and hit it with lightning many times. Eventually, the party defeated it after it had shifted the surroundings to a massive industrial factory, a favorite place of Buster Unit 37. After the creature was defeated, the party found themselves standing in a normal barn.
The party followed the blood stains left by the ogre that had dragged the unfortunate man out, the party approached a hole. The eyeball monster Chenoweth emerged from the hole and confronted the party: "You killed the balhannoth. I liked its stories. Why would you kill the balhannoth?"
As the group began to answer, a familiar figure climbed out of the hole behind Chenoweth: the Mollabish woman that had given all of the party (except for Samel) the strange rings of protection that they had put on. She exclaimed that she had been teaching Chenoweth about the idea of using deception as a tool, since that was something foreign to him. She shifted her form to reveal herself as Priestess Betterfingers.
Willamina, having previously served with Priestess Betterfingers on the brief-lived city council of Lents, immediately recognized that the creature talking to them wasn't Priestess Betterfingers and called the deception out. The creature, realizing that its ruse had been called, dropped its form and shifted into its true appearance as a small-nosed, heavily-jowled hag with lichen-like hair. She identified herself as Kwalh'h'peshuh'leh'tah, which Tinga translated as "Auntie Cruel Teeth" (referred to as Auntie Cruel Teeth from here on). Auntie Cruel Teeth encouraged Chenoweth to destroy the party if they wouldn't submit to his rule.
The party briefly tried to interact with Chenoweth, convincing them that they were on the right side (Tinga: "We talked to everybody and they didn't agree with you"), but Chenoweth was convinced by Auntie Cruel Teeth that the party was up to no good. It activated its anti-magic cone and confronted the party.
The party identified Auntie Cruel Teeth and attacked both her and Chenoweth. Auntie Cruel Teeth transformed Samel into a toad. The party got some good hits in on Chenoweth, but Chenoweth used his eye rays to successfully transform Buster and Gabilan into stone. As the party got their hits in on Chenoweth, Auntie Cruel Teeth encouraged it to use her wand that had the same color of tip as the rings on most of the party.
Chenoweth levitated Auntie Cruel Teeth's wand into one of his eye stalks and activated it. Immediately, everyone who had been wearing one of Auntie Cruel Teeth's rings went into a period of stasis (which also removed the petrification of some of the players) and briefly triumphed in its success before the wand exploded, killing Chenoweth. Auntie Cruel Teeth cackled in enjoyment and exclaimed "They never learned who to trust!"
With Samel transformed into a frog, Auntie Cruel Teeth scooped him up and slowly surveyed all of the paralyzed party members that had previously put on her rings. Stroking Samel, she made a wave of her hand and announced "Goodbye forever, Lents Irregulars!"
In a flash, Willamina, Gabilan, Tinga, Zabbas, and Buster found themselves in a world where Bestest never existed. As aspects of their memory faded, they made their way back to Lents.
Post-Credits Scene: Samel, a frog, returns to his previous form. Looking around, he sees members of Bestest lamenting over the denuded skull of Chenoweth. Picking himself off the ground and seeing that no other members of the party are with him, he calls Pony Pony over to his side. As he heads back to Lents, he says "Alright, Pony Pony, let's find our friends."
