Adventurer City of Ardil Settlement in The Sundering | World Anvil

Adventurer City of Ardil

The city of Ardil is located within the northern most part of Destria. Due to its long history of being a place for adventures to inhabit, it doesn't fall under destrian jurisdiction, rather it falls under the rule of a council made up of the five most influential people within the city, Council of Five.
The city is rather well defended even though the actual infrastructure is sub-standard. The city boasts a powerful fighting force of nearly 8,000 adventures with magic gear and combat instincts honed from fighting countless monsters and raiding dangerous ruins.

Demographics

Most of the city's population are non-humans from all over the world. The actual species breakdown is:
Human 14%
Dwarf 19%
Elf 20%
Gnome 13%
Half-Ork 9%
Half-Elf 12%
Other Races 13%

Government

The City is governed by the four most powerful adventurer guilds and the merchant guild. Each guild's leader and the chairman of the merchants form a council, called the Council of Five, which decides broad stroke decisions for the city and divvies up the responsibilities of defense.

Defences

Even though the physical defenses of the city (meaning the walls and gates) are in disrepair the guards of the city are typically well trained. The city guards are from the guild "Fists First" and boast membership of about 1000 strong. On top of the warriors and guards of "Fist First," the druids and rangers of "Black Arrow" guard the wilds nearby.

Industry & Trade

Much of the trade within the city is funded by adventurers getting gear or offloading loot from recent adventures. Adventures looking for gear will find many shops selling various qualities of weapons and armors.
Some of the more well known shops:
Rusty's Discount Sword Emporium- Low-tier weapon and armor shop, caters to Iron ranked and below
While the Iron's Hot- Mid-tier weapon and armor shop, caters to Silver through Platinum. Higher rankes tend to find a specific smith for their gear.
The Snapped String- A popular fletcher with great ties to Black Arrow.
Bracers and Bootstraps- A popular leather-worker with rumored ties to the Shadowsteppers.
The Green Thumb Apothecary and Herbalist- a popular apothecary for those who can afford the potions made there.
The Helpful Bull- A well known tavern within town.

Infrastructure

The city has poor infrastructure when it comes to walls and sewers, but has great city layout planning. Routes to the walls and most of the rest of the city are quick with little traffic on non-main streets.

The City is built on a large hill surrounded by plains.

Assets

The city of Ardil is mostly made of shops, the shop owners' houses, and the houses of adventurers. The city itself owns several warehouses containing supplies for the city guards and for festivals.

Guilds and Factions

The city of Ardil has many small guilds and factions vying for power but there are Five main groups of note:
Valiant's Lightguard
Black Arrow
Fists First
Shadowsteppers
Ardilian Merchants Association
As well as the organization that handles adventurers and their place in society:
Adilian Adventurer Association

History

The city of Ardil was founded in 324 PreS as a camp at the base of a hill owned by a man named Ardus. The camp was formed by the founding members of the four adventurer guilds of the Council of Five and their parties as they prepared to go fight in the Great Hunt of 324. After the hunt had ended the place where the groups had met became a meeting place for adventurers as they head off on quests. Eventually the amount of groups meeting at the hill led merchants to come set up shops and bring their families, thus Ardil grew into what it is today.
Around 50 PreS, the council decided to institute an organization that would rank adventurers based on skill and divvy up quests based on ranks. This decision was made to reduce the deaths of novice adventurers.

Architecture

The city has gothic style houses and fortifications while also still being a bit rundown due to the antics of bored adventurers. There are tall towers and houses with steep tiled roofs.

Geography

The city sits on a large hill with forests nearly a mile away. The surrounding area is mainly plains with slight hills.
