Localized Phenomena

Sandsweeps are uncommon but possible occurrences in the Fallacious Flats. It is effectively a watery sandslide that often travels greater distances due to its watery composition. These typically happen on the western end of the flats where it ends in a cliff overlooking a series of crags and canyons. They are caused by excessive rainfall and earthquakes.
Sandbursts are typically caused by earthquakes. Naturally, sand is the weakest part of the planet's crust and tectonic structure; as such, the sudden release of pressure between tectonic plates causes this quicksand lake to blast outwards. Fans of sand erupt dozens of feet into the air, with some measuring more than a quarter-mile long. This phenomenon occurs spontaneously alongside some earthquakes, averaging up to 6 events per year.

History

The Fallacious Flats hasn't always feigned its identity; in fact, some centuries ago it truly was what it appeared to be: nearly 1,300 square miles of clear, shifting, white quartz sand. A sudden shift in climate spanning the course of decades brought such rainfall as this region has never seen before; unrelentlessly dousing the arid and dry landscape in deluge after deluge. Such a dramatic change in weather patterns quickly weathered the dunes, flattening out its peaks until the geography earned part of the name it has today. The Fortusian Dunes were then called the Fortusian Flats.
That name did not hold fast for very long, however, as it was soon discovered that this region of endless sand was much less a geographic flat and much more a lake. A deceitful lake, but a lake nonetheless. What was once a region of vast sands and peaking dunes has evolved into a massive expanse of deceptive quicksand.
The climate grew more tame after decades of torrential ferocity; the heat accustomed to such regions never wavered, but the amount of precipitation did. Rainfall has transformed the outer reaches of the Flats into a thriving jungle but no longer frequently results in sandsweep-causing deluges. It appears to provide sufficient rain for the sands to maintain its strange state of equilibrium that composes quicksand.
